Why I Want: Anton Lundell – The Draft’s Potential SELKE Winner (2020 NHL Draft Prospects)

When it comes to the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, the guys with high flash and all skill definitely leave a mark. Guys like Tim Stützle, Alexis Lafrenière, Quinton Byfield, Marco Rossi, Jack Quinn, and Jamie Drysdale are all players who thrive in the spotlight. In today’s Why I Want though, we’re focusing instead on a guy who doesn’t thrive with a flare for the dramatic, and instead plays such a passive and lowkey game that it may not even be super apparent what makes him so valuable. with that in mind though, this player, Anton Lundell of the HIFK in the Liiga, is probably the most likely candidate out of the entire draft to be considered for a Selke trophy some time down the line.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The current NHL Draft Lottery odds, go in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. Honestly I’d pass on him. I don’t like his upside. I honestly believe he’s gonna be a second or third line centre. Wouldn’t be surprised if I’m wrong tho.

  2. i dont like him he is way overated and the numbers are not there this draft is to good to have a player that has a third line center max pot

  3. He doesn't have nearly as much upside and potential as the other prospects at the top of the draft which is why he's probably gonna be drafted somewhere 8-12 imo

  4. i think this guy might drop FAR. im talking like 20-25th overall. I think scouts are leaning towards guys who can score a ton of points, cause thats more where the league is going. But i think if he does drop that far, he’s gonna be by far the steal of the draft.

  5. Sounds like the exact opposite of players the Sabres have drafted over the past decade, which is why they should take him

  6. I share my birthday and birth year with this guy. Probably one of the reasons along the fact that were both finns that make me really excited to see how he’ll do in the nhl.

  7. So Lundell = Plekanec … He impressed in it's first year and got more efficient in the second one… if he's there at 8… why not ….
We need gritty leaders. I'd expect montreal to look for Sanderson D USDT before Lundell.

  8. Again as a long term Finnish hockey fan i have something to say. Lundell in my opinion is perhaps the safest pick in the draft. He really is a guy who does everything right for you. If your team drafts him, you are not going to get mad at him. He doesn't make bone headed or high risk plays. He is the embodiment of "playing the game the right way". Every coach will love him and because he already has time in the pro league, he can go to AHL and likely be 1 year away from regular NHL time. In terms of his future, i would say that in best case scenario he can become a Sean Couturier. That is at his absolute best. But even is he busts i'd say he can not be worse than Radek Faksa. I project that most likely he will be around Mikael Backlund level player. Solid nro. 2, 2-way guy who does everything for you. Every team can use a guy like him. If you are drafting a guy, who at worst is a 3rd line shut down center and at best 1st line Couturier type, you take him. In this draft there are several high end scoring talents, those tend to push down guys like Lundell. I'm looking at 7 at the highest and 13 at the lowest. If a team takes him at 7, they clearly think he has a solid shot to become a 1st line center. If he drop to around 13 teams clearly see him more as a 2nd line guy.

  9. You should do a followup video to this man. Lundell has been tearing up liiga, he has 16 goals and 25 points in 24 games.
