Regarding Brendan Smith, people are quick to point the finger at his lack of productivity on the ice. While he did struggle statistically, he was able to have a noticeable impact within the locker room. When I spoke to him at exit interviews, he displayed his high hockey IQ and unselfish attitude. He demonstrated why his teammates and coaching staff think so fondly of him.

The veteran players I think were very key for the younger guys. I think the Devils have a good mix, much better than some other teams. I'd love to see Brendan become a coach or mentor when he retires.
If you ever doubted Haula watch his mic'd up from Rangers vs Devils playoff game 3. His veteran skills are legit.
There's always a place for a player like Smith. This comes from a guy who has a Cam Janssen jersey.
Smith is the perfect player to fill the 7th spot and play 40 games. The Devils were fortunate last year that their Defenseman stayed relatively healthy. Next year may be different and Smith could be needed to play more games even if they sign another veteran defenseman.
Brendan Smith is depth who brings physicality and solid in his own end. Good locker room guy and he interviews great. Do not think anyone was expecting him to score much.
Smith was very good for the Devils las year. The team needs players like him.
