@Calgary Flames

[Pat Steinberg] Backlund was also asked tonight about rumors surrounding his future in Calgary. “It’s out of my hands. I’ve had discussions with Craig and my agent and we’ll see what happens. I’ve got one more year with Calgary and it’s not my decision if I stay (next season) or not.”

I love backs but the way he words this doesn’t sit well with me.

  2. Theboofgoof

Yeah I call bullshit in this one backs

  3. Chemical_Signal2753

This sounds like “I’ve turned down the offered extension and I expect to be traded.”

I still think Backlund is the ultimate sell high guy. People say that about Toffoli but he’s 3 years younger than Backlund and scores way more. Backlund just had a bounce back season and got 19 goals and 50 points, but the year prior he had 11 goals. All this while making $5.25. He’s been good for us but if people are offering real young assets it may be the right time to move on, and it sounds like he’s more than okay with that.

I really dislike this, like he in fact is a human being with agency about what contract he chooses to sign

I love Backlund but ffs I wish these guys weren’t so cryptic when it comes to potentially being on their way out of Calgary and would just be outright with their intentions instead of dragging their feet to the very last moment. I’m sure they have to learn it to deal with the media but from a fan perspective it’s incredibly frustrating to follow, especially if they just end up leaving anyway like last year with Gaudreau.

He’s played his entire NHL career with us and if he wants to chase a cup with a contender then I think he’s more than earned that privilege but *pleeeease* for the love of Scorch just give us a straight answer so we can get something for him in return before it’s too late

It sounds to me that Backland’s camp has laid out what they want and Conroy is not going to give him that. A contending team might be willing as he could be the guy that tips the scales.

Seems like he’s anticipating a trade then. Understandable given everything else but still, would have been nice to see him retire a Flame.

How the f isn’t it his decision seems
    Dumb

I know a lot of people say Lindholm is the guy that would hurt to lose, but I’d weirdly be more upset about Backlund than Lindholm.

I need someone to stay a Flame their whole career. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before

Think logically here. He’s 34 and wants to win a cup. Why on earth would he sign with a team that’ll potentially see a mass exodus of notable players? No way he comes back next season

So he demanded too much money or too much term if he doesn’t get it he is going to walk. It’s a nice way to have your cake and eat it too. We have all done the same when stuck in a job we hated “hey boss I found a new job they are offering x if you can’t beat it I’ll have to go.”

  13. rothtravo

This is probably exactly what his agent told him to say. He’s playing for the Flames next year if they don’t trade him and water is wet.

  14. -biggulpshuh

Translation: Trade me right fucking now! Now hang up.

Unless the return for backs is impossible to say no to, I think you hold on to him and worst case scenario the team is no good and you trade him at the deadline. Let’s not forget that we were one win away from the playoffs, with a markstrom/vladar combo that was brutal, a head coach that lost the room in week 4 and historically bad years for some of our best players. We have a reasonably good chance of being good enough to make the playoffs next year, and having backs around the mentor young two way players might actually be worth more than what we can get in return.

doesn’t want to be here? trade him now. Also his answer is mega bitch.

I won’t miss Rick Ball calling how he couldn’t find the handle or some other excuse as to why he’s painfully average. He’s like Rudy, only now he has no heart.

ya ya bring on the hate, I don’t care… if you don’t want to play for this team, then let me show you the door.

I see this as “if Lindholm doesn’t re-sign, I will be asking for a trade”

This is the guy that a lot of people wanted to be captain? Sorry, this is gutless.
