The Edmonton Oilers and the Chicago Blackhawks are going to face each other in one of the play-in rounds for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Previously, we spoke about how this series is gonna be crazy entertaining, but today, we’re speaking about how I no longer like this series. This stems from the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery, and how the 1st overall pick was one by a play-in loser pick.

This means that, by default, the loser of the Oilers/Blackhawks series is going to have a 1/8 shot at winning Alexis Lafreniere. On one hand, you have the Edmonton Oilers, who’ve already drafted 1st overall four times going back to 2010, selecting Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nail Yakupov, and Connor McDavid. On the other, you have the remnants of the dynasty Blackhawks, still boasting the likes of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Corey Crawford, Duncan Keith, and other parts of what used to be a dominant team. On top of that, the Blackhawks also drafted 3rd overall last year too, selecting Kirby Dach.

The current NHL rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft go as follows:

1st) Undetermined team
2nd) Los Angeles Kings
3rd) Ottawa Senators (via San Jose Sharks)
4th) Detroit Red Wings
5th) Ottawa Senators
6th) Anaheim Ducks
7th) New Jersey Devils
8th) Buffalo Sabres.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The former NHL Draft Lottery odds, went in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. If either one gets the pick I will quit watching nhl Hack BS league any more sad Pro sport !

  2. Oilers fan, I want the cup. If not, I wanna tilt the entire league and get 1st overall for shitting on us for years. These are the rules you fought for so you can't complain

  3. Just saying, if we do get the 1st overall, Chicago will be one of the most deadly offensively. Yeah our defence looks like shit but if we do get Lafreniere, Stan Bowman better fucking focus on getting better defensively.

  4. I am an edmonton fan and even I don't really want him because I want our team to win. It has been over 10 years of losing and i'm sick of it.

  5. Sorry I love seeing Crosby/Malkin,McDavid/Leon,Matthews/Taveras,Toews/Kane on the same team. I like seeing great players playing with other great players. It's something to behold. Everyone would've KILLED to see Gretzky & Lemieux play on the same team, instead of the 1 time we got. They would be nearing 200 pts each year,

  6. Chicago is clearly the bad team. They are a shell of their former selves for 3 years now. The Oilers should win this in 3 or 4 if they don’t blow it. They should not be even in the play in round this year.

  7. The Oilers are one of two teams with 4 players with 0.9 points per game (that have played 20 games or more). Their record and stats December 31 and later were one of the best in the league in almost every category (even on defense!).

  8. Looks like Doctors determined Corey Crawford's brain is basically oatmeal at this point, and he's likely out. That should tip the favors to The Oilers who at least have some sort of defense at this point.
Also Mike Green is not playing, that's a plus for Edmonton.

  9. None of this made sense, I watched the whole thing and still don’t know what he was talking about

  10. If Calgary or Winnipeg got it, seems similar. However being Calgary has never drafter higher then 4th they kind of deserve it.

  11. Chicago is not a good team. They have the worst record of any team in the playoffs. This isn’t the team that won the cup 5 years ago.

  12. Every matchup in the west is pretty even. Carolina and Pit are probably the only examples of a decent favourite. Toronto is going to struggle with Columbus.

  13. They should just have given the pick to Seattle would make way more sense business-wise too, and it would benefit every owner regardless.
