Avs trade Alex Newhook to #Habs for Gianni Fairbrother, the 31st overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, and the 37th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

    So this was unexpected.

Avs might feel like Newhook didn’t show enough upside and wanted capital to either build more in the player pipeline or for a future trade

  2. goavsgo1988

I don’t hate it, I liked Newhook but getting a 1st and 2nd for him has to mean that something else is coming

  3. WastedTalent34

whaaat, so now they have 2 late 1sts and an early 2nd round pick,
maybe they want to package these together to move up into the teens for the draft, or they just didn’t want to pay newy any money so they could bring in other people for the bottom 6. Either way this trade doesn’t happen unless something else is already in the works.

In Sakic and MacFarland we trust! sheesh

  4. golieman99

They must have a few kids they really really like in the 30-40 range. They have 3 picks in that range now.

  5. hagopes

Not.. too surprising tbh. I liked Newhook, but I think he needs another system to really flourish.

  6. DRAI-29

instead of Johansson why didn’t the avs trade for Hayes for 2C? costs less too and put up better point totals, RyJo also had a major surgery.

I don’t really hate this trade. I think Newhook had his shot last year and didn’t really take it. This looks like the Avs have something else in the works, but the draft is also deep and our prospect pool is depleted so either way is ok I guess

We shall see how it plays out. If they were going to trade him, it would be at his highest value instead of waiting like Jost. Unfortunately, he does look to have Jost-ism. He would have moments where it intrigued you but other than that, hardly noticeable.

Now I don’t have to yell “two hands on your stick!” anymore every time he tries to corral the puck

I know he’s young but I think he was a little overrated among Avs fans. Got muscled off the puck so easily. Hopefully we’re flipping the picks in a bigger deal

Edit: god I hope this doesn’t mean we’re giving Compher $5million+

    Double edit: Sharangovich incoming?

Newhook was never going to be that 2C. You saw how they felt in the playoffs when he played an Average of 9 minutes. I trust something bigger is coming. Good luck to newhook!

Habs fan here to explain Gianni Fairbrother:

He’s a throw in and not worth even looking up.

The main assets are the picks.

  12. gallapagos42

Honestly hate seeing a roster player get moved for just picks. Makes me think this trade tree has only sprouted and the moves aren’t done yet

  13. BigPoppa_Smurf

Could have also been Newhook asking for a trade. Montreal is close to home for him. Unexpected and not sure how I feel about it.

  14. NahdiraZidea

Fairbrother missed all last season with a knee injury, have to see if he can grt back to form with the Eagles.

  15. fatch0deBoi34

Look to me, Newhook is a great guy and always looks like teammates enjoy being around him, but my god going multiple stretches last year of weeks without getting a single point is horrible.

Finally glad they sold before the return on investment would be nothing (Girard)

  16. EdDantes21

I liked Newhook but the picks seem like pretty decent value

  17. OctaVariuM8

I can’t say I love giving up on our only reasonably young C to snag a couple of picks. I imagine this has to be setting up some other type of move where having more draft capital is required.

Don’t know anything about Fairbrother but he played 25 games for Laval and was a -14 in ’21-’22 so…yeah. In CMAC I trust. Fingers crossed it all works out. Gonna miss Newy though.

  18. 2ChainzTalib

Kinda surprising, but I don’t hate it. I feel like he was at his ceiling here, so that feels like good value from another team that thinks he still has some untapped potential.

  19. daishi777

Kinda tells me he wanted a lot more than the avs would give. Arbitrationwith a guy who’s a been…iffy when we could use his $ for Compher or someone similar is unpalatable. Newy overplayed and got shipped for a decent return in a bad draft.

I can’t help but feel like more is coming, but this could have also been just dodging a bad situation

  20. Appleanche

Wow this kinda of rocked my Tuesday afternoon.

It’s shocking but I think a good move, Newhook had a lot of opportunity to go forward this year, but he just didn’t and even on the bottom 6 he’s kind of tough because he’s like a 38% career faceoff guy and that entire bottom six got absolute caved in by Seattle. The mix just wasn’t there at all.

I think the return is good for him, next year if he kept it up, we’d probably just get a second.

Best wishes to him in Montreal!

  21. ihatethedodgers

Newhook showed flashes but not enough for management to be sure he was gonna pan out.

Good move by Sakic and Co

  22. ThisIsNotMy1stAcct

Interesting. Would love to see what we can turn those picks (or maybe our own first) into. At this point I’d have to think they’re more of a trade piece than actual draft capital based on our window.

Also wonder what this means for guys like Compher and Eller. If you believe in RyJo as the 2C then we’re still looking at a 3C and 4C with one of the possibilities now gone. I still don’t think there’s enough cap space for Compher but am excited to see how things play out.

  23. nystrom19

I thought the avs might keep newhook as a 3C that could move up with injuries but he probably wanted more money or term than the avs could pay for that role.

    Wish Newhook the best.

Now that the avs have 3 picks to play with, I expect them to go after a top 6 winger on a cheap contract (maybe hall at 50% retention or similar move to that).

  24. Jabroni_City

Bet you Avs trade for Debrincat with those picks and maybe another roster player

  25. QforShort

MacKinnon about to have to play 50 minutes a night.

  26. BoneyardBill

This hurts. Loved Newhy. Hope this is to get another piece from a trade. Especially if Gabe is out still. Need to shore up the C.

  27. CitizenNaab

I like it overall. It stinks to see him go but this will make the team better

  28. Typhoonman27

I am so confused by this. Maybe a minority opinion but I think the team gave up on Newy too early

  29. TheEskimoLee

Newhook always gave me Kerfoot vibes there but not quite the top

  30. cmrn631

I had high hopes for Newhook but he turned into Jost 2.0, better to get the picks now while his value is still decent

  31. SergeantBBQ

I expected us to give Newhook one last shot at 3C next season, but ultimately I was more or less ready to move on from him.

I’ll be happy for him if he breaks out in montreal because I do like the guy, but I’m also glad to get some asset return for him while he still has potential

  32. DevourerJay

Well, this kinda sucks… I liked him, I had him pegged as a good replacement for Kadri, that never materialized, and he was no where to be found in the playoffs…

    So I understand the why.

So let’s look at the positive, trade picks or draft ammo, either way, it’s good.

  33. Godspeed Newy I hope you find your feet on the Habs.

    I kinda saw this coming:

He was turning into Tyson Jost 2.0 on the Avs, they wanted some value while it was still there and perhsps to give him a change of scenery before it’s too late with his development.

Former first round pick given all the opportunity he could need and the flashes of brilliance still remained occasional. Caught in the no man’s land between the top and bottom six not really being a fit for either but paradoxically still definently an NHL lever player.

  34. Maess420

My guess is we are close to signing JT as a 3C since we just got Johansen. And then i would bet we are flipping one of the 1st’s and something for a top 6 winger.

  35. Hungry_Definition450

    McSakic flipping this for something.

  36. HotPissInTheMornin

These picks could be anything!! They could even be another Alex Newhook!

  37. Awkward_traveler

I love that there is never any rumors about Avs trades. SackFarland runs a tight ship.

  38. forsberg2110

The rebuild is on. Collecting picks, planning for the future. I know I’ll get down voted but I’m only joking. Let’s hope our front office plans to flip these picks for something good.
