Avalanche Trade Newhook to Canadiens for a Prospect and Picks

This is a good deal for both sides. We’ll see how Newhook does playing for Montreal. He has a lot of potential.

  1. Alot of Newfoundlanders are gonna be happy. Fan fair if anything. Ryder was a star in Montreal.

  2. I think Avs won this trade. I would have liked something more like a 3rd round pick either this year or next year from the Avs. I think we gave too much as Habs. Future will tell.

  3. I don't know why but I have a feeling Montreal is going to retain salary and trade Dvorak to Vancouver to be the 3c , no sure what the return would be tho

  4. I see alot of mixed reactions to this trade but Shannon said it best. CAP. RELIEF. Straight value alone (RIGHT NOW) its Avs all the way with the win, but Newhook could blossom in MTL then it looks like a steal 3 years from now.

Compher, is not a 2C, but Avs already addressed that, Johansen, this now means that Compher gets to play the role he is more suited for at 3C. of course, this is provided he gets signed by the Avs, which I do hope so but we shall see in a week.

Newhook has talant, but his on ice vision and decision making is not at all decisive, he tends to make mistakes or force something he shouldnt fairly consistently. This is why even though he is capable of some amazing moves, he continues to be bottom feeder and not capable of moving up. Less pressure in MTL should assist his development, he would either be stifled here in a checking role, or the pressure would be too great. (important to note he was scratched alot in the stanley cup run even though Kadri was injured so there were openings)

As an overall view of this trade, MTL is taking a risk in my opinion with this, however, picks are not as important as you would think or as EANHL makes you think, essentailly 2 second round picks leaves you with what, 50% chance of finding an NHL caliber middle six fwd or top 6 dman? Queue the development timeline and you arnt getting bang for your buck yet with those picks for another few years.

I see this becoming a package deal situation, as there isnt much else that the Avs need those picks for.

  5. I hope the Avs trade for another top 6 F, perhaps using these picks. Newhook was solid, but just not the right fit for the current Avs team. Surprised they got a 1st round pick even though it’s practically a second.

  6. Dumb trade for the Habs. I dont know what they were thinking. Do they see something in Newhook that I don't see. I mean, he has some skill but doesn't seem to have a great shot and the elusiiveness he showed at lower levels wasn't nearly as prevalent in the majors. I would rather take my chances developing those top 40 picks they gave up and that promising dman.

  7. I don't know Newhook enough…Maybe they got Newhook to move Dvorak who has turned out to be an very expensive deal given his poor point production. Or maybe just a spare centreman…who knows….Newhook's stats are nothing to write home about either…Hopefully the Habs can get the most out of Newhook, if at all a good support staff player or "hole plugger"…we'll see this season…

  8. The last potent no 31 2009 Mikko Koskinen
The last potent no 37 2011 Booner Jenner
So it may be a deep draft but at 31 and 37, there hasn't been anything better then Newhook in a long time.
So I like that trade for Montreal but who knows, draft picks are always a gamble.

  9. I'm in a minority here that thinks Colorado really really lost this trade. A young Newhook who in my opinion will be a top 6 forward in a few years traded for a 2nd and a worse prospect? I just can't imagine what the organization was thinking with this. He could have signed a team friendly deal too. Remember this comment when Newhook becomes a key piece to Montreal's future success.

  10. To me it seems Montreal might actually want Michkov, they are loaded on centers right now and the only one of the top 5 that isn't a center is Michkov, ain't gonna complain if they do end up drafting him

  11. I don't know why, but that trade looks a lot like the Kirby Dach trade last year but a little less expensive. I'm talking about a young prospect with high potential in the wrong situation for development or in a team who has no time for it for a first round pick a second a young defenseman in the side Montréal has surplus. I think it's an excellent trade for both team, Newhook under St-Louis will have the chance to play in a more offensive line, maybe the second with like Slafkovsky and the Avs add some good draft pick to make moves or draft and Fairbrother honestly could be a nice top 6 defenseman in the future…he was just a lot injured last year but at camp he looked very good ! Patience pay for Hugues !

  12. I've been rooting for Newhook, hoping he would come around and be more productive. No one works harder but, that hard work doesn't seem to get many results. Maybe the Avs gave up on him too early. Hope Montreal is the place for him.

  13. I love this trade for both sides honestly. Newhook could fit in absolutely perfectly in Montreal with Caulfield. That would be a great start to building a really young talented team over there. And as for Colorado, while he is an extremely talented player his progress was becoming pretty stagnant with our team for whatever reason, and we just have too many superstars to give him the time he would need on the first or second line to really develop. Not to mention we needed cop space to resign some guys and we also got a possible defenseman out of this as well. Another baller move by McFarland and Sakic.

In my opinion I think we end up using those draft picks to trade for an existing NHL player to add depth to our team but we'll see.
