Hayes: ‘I don’t believe Shanahan weighs playoff failure as much as he does regular season success’

On Tuesday, Brad Treliving confirmed Sheldon Keefe will return as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Treliving added that he believes the team can sign both Auston Matthews and William Nylander to contract extension this summer as the two forwards become eligible on July 1st. Bryan Hayes joins Jay Onrait to discuss Keefe and the ‘Core Four’ possibly all returning, how the fans might react to running it back, and weighs in on the Leafs goaltending situation.

  1. 7 years of failure Shanahan is a idiot he does not know what it takes to win a Stanley cup he wants to bring them back is he serious fans should just boycott this team.

  2. I'm leafs fan it's not just 4 Players that wins everyone stupid or what of course you keep them if you can it's been shity week defenceman that's been the problem will be 7-9 different guys this year that is a lot of turnover and can make a difference you all nuts don't just trade good players to get worse because thsts what would happen

  3. I want change too but I don't buy the narrative that shanahan is content with regular season success. The guy was a winner and a determined player in his career

  4. This is best leafs team and players I have seen in 40 years and people want to trade everyone toronto fans and media or crazy dumb people

  5. Speaking as a fan of an opposing fanbase, with how competitive the Atlantic division is going to end up being (pretty much everyone is in it except Montreal it feels like), you do have to actually get to the dance before you play well. There’s a serious world where the Atlantic gets turned upside down next year and teams like Detroit, Buffalo, and Ottawa take hold in that division and fight with Boston, Tampa, Toronto and Florida. So regular season numbers do matter.

That being said, I don’t see how any logical person in charge can be satisfied with 1 first round victory in 7 attempts, and that occurred in a series they got significantly outplayed in. These “core 4” continually fail to show up when it matters most.

This isn’t a capitals situation where you just have to get over the hump. The leafs top players are the ones who continually disappoint when it matters.

Go ahead, sign Matthews to a 15 million dollar contract, and Marner to a 13 million dollar one. I’d love it.

  6. Cuz they know they’ll sell tickets no matter what 🤷🏻‍♂️ until the fanbase REALLY starts to put pressure on the front office & turn on them they’ll have no problem with mediocrity. In my opinion you’re a schmuck if you watch this team regularly in the regular season. 82 games over 7 months just to witness the same bullshit & have the same conversations come May.
