Bomani Jones and Pablo S. Torre react to comments made by Gilbert Arenas on his podcast that he’s tired of 1990s NBA players like Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman saying they could easily defend modern players.

Dennis Rodman will not make it today
Scottie could make it
The problem with Scottie and Rodman is that they don’t respect the greats today. Yeah they could lock down roll players, but neither of them can guard LeBron or KD or Kawhi or any of those dudes. I know they think they can, but the game has evolved to a point where defense doesn’t stop greatness. What is Scottie going to do with a guy like James Harden? And Scottie is my favorite player of all time. It’s not about their skill. It’s about the rules of the game today. You can’t put your hands on a dude like you used to so their strength at that size doesn’t matter cuz Russell Westbrook is too strong and fast to be stopped by a 6’7” 220 pound dude.
I agree with Gil. Almost EVERY 90s player believes they are unbeatable and their teams would crush anyone. Evolution is a thing and will always be the thing to beat. I’m sorry these 2 would last in the league today but DEFINITELY not as long😕
Put Jordan in these league he MIGHT thrive. It’s a shooters league and if Lebron is their I REALLY don’t know how it’s fair😕 be LOGICAL about this. Don’t let emotions and etc cloud your judgement folks
Rodman and Scottie wouldn’t even be guards they would be power forwards and centers in today’s game the game shrunk size down the league is smaller. Arenas is smoking crack cuss he tripping he must not be to up to date with today’s players
Arenas who never made one all nba first or second defensive team is going to critique the greatest sf defender of all time and the greatest rebounder of all time. Earth to Gilbert. It was more physical back then, and these two “small” guys were dominating during the center generation when you were allowed to actually play physical basketball. Scottie and Dennis can defend anyone in any era. I’ve seen Rodman slow down Shaquille O’Neal, I’ve seen pippen clamp down on Karl Malone. Both Malone and O’Neal are huge players
Rodman use to guard Shaq and Pippen defended 1-4. Arenas sounds dumb.
Gilbert just lost credibility. Pippen used to guard Anthony Mason who was like 250 pounds.
Bruh mcgrady was 6'8 210 and gave 6'9 250 lebron the business in 06 🤷🏽🤷🏽
Old mfs just don’t wanna let it go..
old guys unable to admit evolution, generation will always surpass every generation.
Aww no here comes the 80s and 90s fan bull zombies. Now watch the disrespect in the comments as they call dennis rodman and scottie pippen top 5 while downplaying other nba legends and hall of famers who also better and on par with them on defense. There's no such thing as the goat of rebounding, defense, offense, or at a position.
Gilbert is tripping james harden, Kobe Bryant, Grant hill, and other guys online along with Dennis Rodman are pretty much around the same weight I seen online Pippen is 230lbs and Rodman 220lbs
They never saw talent like today ppl may say Jordan but Jordan wasn't pulling from the logo and he wasn't effecient
Basketball iq is much higher these days. Don't forget that. These guys are smart asf. If you drop LeBron back then he'd be much better than wilt. Wilt was not a student to the game. He was a freak athlete playing mostly slightly above average athletes in a time were the game was simple. I'll give the past credit for pushing the game along. But the game isn't just evolving it's getting better. And the truth is the players in the past were never better than the players now cuz how could they have been. If you place a high caliber player now in the past they'd be goated. You place a high caliber player back the exactly how they were now they'd be significantly worse besides people whose game translates of course. Old guys are are like would have been this if I played today. In reality they will never be that and never were so that sentiment is irrelevant. Idk why they can't admit the present is better. It's supposed to be like that. If it wasn't like that then they didn't do their job. The more the league ages the more history there is to learn from and the better the players get.
Pippen and Rodman still never gonna be able to guard Bron like Draymond never be able guard Bron
Gilbert arenas wasn't great he was good so sit down little man your name aint going up in the raptors period. There is no evolution in the NBA just a bunch of watered down rules
The 90's literally was the best era. If the game has evolved than how come they can't produce that type brand of basketball? Because it has tooken a step backwards and its hard to stay engaged with a entire game because its so boring unless the warriors are at full strength its fun to watch and im not a warriors fan KNICKS all day BABY!
Gilbert Arenas comment s on Rodman Pippen are stupid he's a fool he never won as anything his comments mean nothing putting the 90s down he's wrong
Lebron has yet to dominate the NBA playoffs….his team mates won those rings… kyrie won for Cleveland…Wade won for Miami…. oh we won't forget the covid season lakers won ….hmmm…..
Pippin couldn't guard lebron…Jordan couldn't guard these hanlder guards
Gilbert you are so jealous you never won anything the 90s were great and you are speaking as foolish as a person could your comments don't carry any weight at all Gilbert Dennis was unreal as a team player something you werent you are ridiculous Gilbert
When people say stuff like that they not talking about the average player they usually are speaking about the best. Which can cloud your judgement because the best of any era tends to be guys who could play in any era and dominate.
6'7" 220 would be a small guard in today's league?! Russell Westbrook is 6'4 210.. huh?
GA only made that comment because Rodman said shuting down LeBron and kd will be easy..like nothing..so from their previous comment he just share his opinion.✌️
He's being honest
Bad example, I get his point but he should've picked a better example.
So dreymond green 66 pj tucker plays center stfy gill
Center 7 footer player today can shoot 3s
Still when you can play defence
It will translate to any era.
The NBA is so soft yes a
215 pippen will have a
field day.
Y'all crazy if y'all think MAGIC JOHNSON would even be an all star in this era… He wouldn't even be a point guard… Lol he would be more like Draymond than Steph curry give me a freaking break
He loses most credibility first calling them little guards and then stating the game was bigger back then? That’s a huge contradiction on its own, using lebron as his reasoning is asinine as he is clearly an exception to the norm.
Now looking at Rodman specifically; he defended Shaq better than everybody in the NBA outside of dream and dikembe (not counting Duncan as Rodman was basically out the door by then.) who could defend Shaq as well as Rodman in today era? Giannis, Robert Williams, gobert? That’s all I can think of.
Let’s look at todays dynasty the warriors; what is their best lineup? Their death lineup where green is at center whom I consider a more stable, poor man’s Rodman.
I don’t think I need to defend pippen at all.
So mark price can play the 90s while steph kd and lebron can't? It's mutual this bums
Um. Dennis rodman would take someones head off in todays nba where barely 2-3 centers averaging double digit in rebounds when the entire nba has more shot attempts than ever. Oh and PIP….he is twice the frame of a guy like brandon ingram. What his skinny a$$ gonna do? Fade or three or try to guard pip.?? Nah ehhhh wrong. Em two players alone would rap* most of our players let alone gilbert fu*** arenas who let lebron get in his head rent free including him missing two free throws in a row after lebron warned him
..im. gone
Who stops prime Shaq in his Lakers prime on the inside? Giannis? Please, give me a break 😂
who is speaking? Arenas is not even close to the Pippen/Rodman league
