Charlie Stramel is Judd Brackett’s first Big Project for the Wild

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we react to the selection of Charlie Stramel at 21 for the Minnesota Wild. We share concerns about his overall draft rating compared to where he was selected, especially considering other players such as Calum Ritchie were still available when the Wild picked. We hear your reaction to the pick, as Stramel draws comparisons to both Jordan Greenway and Joel Eriksson Ek. We finish by looking at the remaining picks for the Wild, whether or not they will move up or stay put, and how Stramel fits into the rest of the current prospect pool.

  1. There is NO way in HELL this guy was the 21st best NHL prospect..Billy G and Company dropped the ball big time on this one…Picks like this set a team back for at least 1-2 years

  2. Reminds me of the 09 NBA draft… The Timberwolves could have had Steph Curry in the 2009 NBA Draft. Instead they selected Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn. Ouch. This is on BILLY G

  3. Calum ritchie was a guy they could've drafted instead we are drafting 3rd liners in the first round. Embarrasing

  4. I'm holding judgement until he reaches the NHL level, but there was better choices at #21. Hoping he proves me wrong.

  5. This first round pick felt like a joke to me. What a colossal whiff. BG and the rest left their liquor sogged brains at Tootsies. Underwhelming to say the least

  6. While anti-climatic after settling down and listening to Guerin / Brackett they must have a good vibe he’s going to develop in 2-3 years. The kid just turned 18, he’s still growing into his body. He played on a terrible team where it’s nearly impossible to look solid when your always outnumbered on the ice. After evaluating and listening to the Wild, they felt like he was going to be grabbed behind them. We need big centers and size. They said the same thing about Burns many years ago, big kid, no position, look what happened. Give him some time and let the Wild work with the kid before we pass judgement. This may turn out great. The reason it’s so frustrating is because Chicago got their Kane / Toews back in short order and colorado took Ritchie. Every central division team seemed to grab high end talent while we are projecting a long term player’s development. Fingers crossed but let’s see what happens with the rest of the draft and FA before we kill ourselves 😅.

  7. I was shocked at this pick, but based on organization needs, it makes more sense the more you think about it. The Wild weren't going to get a number 1 center at 21, so why pick someone like Callum Ritchie, Otto Stenberg, or David Edstrom when they aren't what you need most? If you can't get that, then getting bigger and tougher in the bottom 6 position doesn't hurt now either, especially if Brandon Duhaime is gone. With Rossi, Ohgren, Khusnutdinov, and Yurov all projected to be top 6 talents within the next year, Stramel makes sense as a bottom 6 center or right winger. Hopefully he's at least an improvement on Jordan Greenway. At best, he could be a Tom Wilson type power forward

  8. @77racing you can’t revise history. The Nyquist move was not met with enthusiasm until the playoffs.

  9. Perreault, Cristall, Musty, and Heidt all have serious top 6 potential. If you wanted a safe and projectable center then Ritchie and Edstrom were available. Shoot I’ve been low Stenburg but I would rather they take a swing there. Stramel could have been picked up in the second I can’t believe they used a first on this guy. Imo the only teams that could justify taking him in the first was teams like the Blues that had multiple first round picks and can afford the take a swing with one of them but the Wild with only one it’s super unadvised.

  10. I know next to nothing about these prospects, but the biggest thing that disappointed me in the draft was moore going to chicago 2 picks before. With judd's resume im waiting to see what happens, but the stuff im hearing/seeing from people much smarter than me is uninspiring to say the least.

  11. The Wild took Riley Heidt with the last pick of the 2nd round. He very well could be the steal of the draft if all things work out. He’s very skilled and has some feistiness to his game.

I’m also willing to give Stramel the benefit of the doubt, he was in a shitty environment and was seen as a lottery pick coming into the year. I trust their judgement and some guys really believe this year was a one-off and that he’ll have a big sophmore year. I’m coming around on the pick even though I probably would’ve went Calum Ritchie like the rest of the fanbase.
