NHL should really invest in some better cameras with higher framerate, sure TV's are 30fps but it makes it soooo much easier to clearly see what is happening slowed down if it is filmed in 120+ fps
It's a shame that the refs saw it clearly yet felt that everything after the initial hooking was OK. They keep managing the game instead of officiating the game. The refs think that they are the directors of the show and want to create drama and excitement instead of officiating by the rules. Mario put it best when he said that the NHL is a garbage league.
The only way stuff like this is suppressed is by giving a second penalty on the play, or by secondary suspension after the fact. It's not like McDavid did something to him earlier. A clear example of a goon targeting a star player.
