  1. Now we’re using these stats? I also see Mitch on here and people want to shoot him into the sun for his “lack” of playoff success.

  2. Mattewsmustache34

Willy is also the only guy other then pasta on that list who doesn’t get used in a defensive situation

  3. Gear4Vegito

I still think Nylander is underrated by our fanbase. He is legit one of the best 5v5 offensive players in the entire NHL, one of the better puck control/zone entry players in the NHL and has one of the best turnover/takeaway ratios for a high volume puck carriers which partially offsets the lesser defensive play.

His PP production and overall point numbers would be even higher if he A) had a bigger role on the PP but Marner & Matthews are priority there or B) he had better consistent lineup than Tavares who often slows him down.

From a contract stand point Nylander has been the most civil with his negations and he has no obligations for a discount if Matthews and Marner aren’t doing it. Nylander at the very least of the 3 seems to be the one truly committed to being a Leaf long-term. No short term contract nonsense, no offer-sheet talk, etc. He wanted 8 years the first time and again all rumours this time around is involving 8 years.

  4. KossyTakos

yeah, but if he wants to win with this team he’s gotta take a discount same with the others that’s how you win. look at the Bruins

  5. Bigking00

Pay him what though? You just cant give him a blank check. I would not give him more than 9m a year. Dubas messed up the Leafs salary structure the first time around. There is no way he deserves more than Matthew Tkachuk who make 9.5 AAV.

  6. Intelligent_Chair901

Nylander doesn’t deserve a penny over $9.25M. At some point the team needs to take a stand. I also find it truly hilarious that Marner who people want to send to the moon is part of these cherry picked stats.

  7. kingex11

If JT wasn’t on this team I would have no problem paying Nylander 10 million. But he is. For two more years. So Nylander has to go. Paying 4 forwards 43-46 million dollars in a cap league isn’t a winning formula.

  8. BigMick20

Only one player on that list making more than $10M. Marner’s definitely overpaid and will be looking for a raise if we don’t trade him today.

  9. HemiKooks

Let him get paid elsewhere, honestly. I feel like a package is available out there that benefits TOR and another team.

    Pesce+ could help us overall.

“Take a team friendly deal Willy we will sort you out on the next deal…”

    Few. Years. Later.

“Take a team friendly deal Willy we will sort you out on the next deal…”

  11. lbc1358

He does deserve to get paid…exactly the same deal that Meier just got. And not a penny more.

  12. hecimov

I remember the consensus between media and fans that Nylander was pretty invisible in our only series win with this core. Now multiple times everyday it’s rate stats explaining that he’s actually a mega star.

  13. TheGiftnTheCurse

I don’t know man, beside his points, he looked disengaged a lot of the playoffs. Some of the points were also pretty lucky. He disappears way to often.

  14. __Dave_

His stats are actually super weird.

At 5v5, he’s behind every player on this list except Meier, with only 4 goals, 11 points in 25 games/357 minutes. But he’s apparently added another 4 goals, 7 points in 29 minutes of 4v4 time so his even strenth numbers are way higher, if natural stat trick has it right.

Only one other player in the league who has played 100 minutes of 5v5 in the playoffs over the past three years has that big of a difference (+0.95p/60) between 5v5 and ES, Ilya Mikheyev (+1.01p/60). That sort of outlier seems to dissappear as TOI increases which suggests its probably a little flukey. For example, over these years in the regular season, Nylander sees a significantly smaller boost between 5v5 and ES, and that includes 3v3 OT where scoring is much higher.

Your numbers have no power over me.

I am already baptized and a confirmed member of the Church of Willy.

    2022-2023 playoffs +/-

    Marner: +5

    Matthews: 0

    Tavares: -2

    Nylander: -5

+/- has its flaws, but given that the lines were mixed up I think it’s reasonable here.

  17. dirtybird131

This might be the most cherry picked post I’ve seen in a minute, did you watch the playoffs? Willy played well when Willy wanted to, and when that wasn’t the case, he was invisible, just like the rest of the Core 4. Those types of people should not be rewarded because they passed it to a guy who passed it to a guy who scored

  18. maximusasinus

I want to keep both Matthews and Nylander, I hope a fair deal is signed for them both. But if we’re going to lose one I think it should be *Matthews*.

Nylander has been our most consistent player always showing up when it matters.

  19. Livid-Quiet-5792

If he wants 8 years no thanks. That would take him to 36,37 years old?.

Id honestly move him as he’s the one guy without a full NTC clause and coming off his best year. The Leafs actually have leverage with Nylander and anything over 4 years once his skating goes he will be next to useless.

He was the biggest – in the playoffs among Leaf forwards this past year and yes I know that’s a ”boomer“ stat but it depicts scoring vs being scored on which is the difference in winning and losing. And not only that a lot of the goals scored with him on the ice are directly tied to him being soft in the D zone and letting his D man set up a goal or score a goal. He really wasn’t the best Leaf forward despite what this sub thinks… Not even close tbh. Hockey is a 2 way game.

Trade him while his value is at a alltime high and dont tie urself to what will be a team killer contract in about 4 years.

  20. Entertame

He does. But the current situation in the market is that there aren’t other teams out there, that would be on his 15 team no trade list that could pay him $10M + anyway. So we have some leverage and need to use it. If it’s under $9M, I will be very happy.

  21. Time for Willy to get paid and the others take a pay cut! If you wanna win with the salary cap you have to be willing to make a sacrifice.

  22. SnooHesitations1965

This is why I’m on the trade Marner wagon. Nylander shows up more when we need him… Marner shrinks (last 7 games of the playoffs, leafs scored 2pts, isn’t he supposed to produce?).

We turn one player into multiple, who can help us spread out support and scoring… He definitely would be the best player in the trade but the return in aggregate could/should be worth more.

  23. canadachris44

100% deserves the pay. Give him more ice time too. Ditch Marner, keep Willy and get a tougher guy for less (than Mitch) to play with Auston. They are out there! Mitch may be a spin o Rama ticket seller but he doesnt have the grit or toughness at all. He never will. Willy also has scored throughout the playoffs in big games, when we need it. Never forget he makes 4million less then spinny Mitchy
