Is there a deadline for a potential Nylander extension?

Jay Onrait was joined by TSN Hockey analyst Dave Poulin to get his thoughts on the likelihood of the Leafs reaching a contract extension with William Nylander, whether Connor Hellebuyck is worth the asking price, and much more ahead of the trade deadline on Saturday.

  1. Mitch Marner is not a comp. Marner in 14 fewer games has 124 more points. Marner was also a Selke finalist, while Nylander can't check a suitcase. Hardly a "comp"

  2. If they trade Willy, I will burn all of my Leafs Merch and become a Red Wings fan instead!

  3. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Poulin comparing him to Marner. Marner is on the ice more especially the PK. He is useless.

  4. surprised the cap only went up a million , it will be interesting the team Leafs start next season I don't envy Brad Treliving he has his work cut out for him signing Matthews is a priority how much will determine if they can sign Willy , who I want to stay with the Leafs, I would give Willy 6 years at 9 million plus bonuses , but were not GM's LOL , I love and hate the cap but what I love it keeps a balance in the NHL good Management is needed , it will be interesting summer, Detroit with their available cap space along with Buffalo could make some interesting signings

  5. Yeah I remember all the idiot leafs fans that was harrassing Nylander and then said Leafs overpayed. Just brainless people

  6. The most important thing is: Nylander has a limited ā€œno movement clauseā€ which restricts the Leafs from trading him to specific named teams. July 1 isnā€™t that important as it is with Matthews whose full no movement clause kicks in.

A $4 M salary difference for the past 4 seasons between Marner and Nylander is mind boggling.

  7. 2nd line power play no or little penalty kill time. Just starting to learn how to back check. Marner is not a fair comp

  8. OK, let's use Marner as a comparable. Marner was a Selke finalist. Nylander is abysmal defensively. In the playoffs, Nylander's poor defensive play resulted in as many goals against the Leafs as he scored for them. He finished the playoffs with a -4 despite being heavily sheltered. Marner was plus seven playing whomever the other coach wanted to play against him. Sure Nylander's offensive play can have value, but he only plays half the game and Marner is elite at all of it. How about 8.5 million?

More important than Nylander's limited no trade clause is the full NMC of Marner and Matthews that kick in at the same time. If money becomes tight, Nylander is the only one of the core 4 that can be traded. The Leafs will get more on a sign and trade anyway, so sending him somewhere that will overpay him will always net the best return for the Leafs. It isn't the leverage point that it is being made out to be.

  9. Well, when a 60 points guy like Pierre Luc Dubois gets 8.5 million, who, I realize is a centre but honestly that contract was a travesty…I think Nylander should get traded for defensive assets, and yes, they're not getting the same value that they will lose but they almost have no choice. If they give William what he wants, possibly 9.5 or 10 million, the rest of the team will be rookies and AHL players, we will not be able to sign O'Reilly or any other UFAs. Potentially, the core 4 could represent more than 50% of the team salary, Murray is getting 4.5, Reilly is making 7.5 million, Kampf 2.4 million, those are the salaries I know off hand. So, these salaries with Nylander making 10 million we're talking approximately and I am being conservative, they account for 60 million+ in salaries leaving 23.5 million to sign another 16 players, so, no way they can improve this roster.

  10. I like Tavares but they need to buy him out. That way they can keep Nylander and strengthen the D.

  11. Only greedy money hungry player's play for the Leaf's, Matthews took a 5 year deal to land him as a UFA, Ultra greedy. Tavares was never a 11m player and also threw a NMC to make it even worse. Not 1 player took a team friendly deal and all they want is a raise when they have proven they can NOT do it in the playoff's? Fire Shanahan and rebuild now.

  12. William Nylander will not likely sign an extension, but may eventually test the open market. āœ”ļø

  13. Due to Bettmans cap spending limit, the top players in the NHL cannot stay on the same team. This squeezes the grinders salaries, and frustrates the local fans.
