Canucks news: why I like the Nate Schmidt trade so much

I outline the reasons why I like the trade for Nate Schmidt, including:
-what we had to give up
-contract term
-cap hit

  1. Gotta give it to Benning, it was a good move… While we lost two D-Men, Schmidt is definitely an upgrade on Tanev. I'm not too worried about his contract, as I think it pretty much covers his serviceable time and he is probably worth it. Now, for this plan to really work out, Juolevi and/or Rathbone and/or Woo (preferably ALL of them) must be able to make the jump into the NHL.

  2. I’m sure Nate Schmidt hasn’t played a full season in the NHL yet. I assume he’s also had some injuries, but Tanev’s style is more prone to injury for sure.

  3. I like the trade aswell. Now they know that Hughes, Schmidt and Myers will be the expensive D in 4-5 years and then some cheaper guys like prospects. I think that besides the 2 million, canucks will have 2 more millions by sending Sven and Loui to Utica. I hope thats possible. Then it will be a little more to sign for Rafferty, Gaudette and Virtanen. And if they have ferland as number 13th forward they could put him on longterminjury and lift up Hoglander if he is good enough.

  4. Get cernak from the lightning and i think canucks can make another push and perhpas a better outcome.

  5. I personally didn’t like this signing when I first saw it, but now that I look at it, Schmidt is a upgrade from Tanev, He can reach 40 points, and he is only getting better and better as the years go on plus we only gave up a 3rd round pick that is 2 years from now, sure the money might be a bit pricey but we need a defencemen.

  6. -Markstrom .916% for Holtby .897% so worse in goal… to save $1.7m & spend $1.5m more on Schmidt (7goals) vs Tanev (2 goals).
    * Better off? Team needed to ADD TOFOLLI !! Boesser & Virtanen are very unreliable & team has a LOT of 'bad offense days'.
Shut out 8 times… 2 goals or less 36 games last yr… Hopefully Demko can take more responsibility… to help replace Marky.
4th line has 6 guys: Baerchi, Sutter, Ferland, Beagle, Roussel, Eriksson, contib 24 goals based on $24mil pay… Our problem area.

  7. Sending Eriksson and Baertschi to the AHL next season will save just over 2 mil on the cap. That´s better than buying out Sutter since we don´t want to add his buyout cost of 1,17 mil to next years cap. Canucks need every cent available to re-sign Pettersson, Hughes and Demko.

  8. I like the acquisition… but I would rather have had Tanev on a cheaper deal.

6 mill for nate Schmidt 5 years of 4.5 for Tanev on 4?

I mean I’m not going to complain, Schmidt is a good player, but on a team that needs cap space, I don’t necessarily see this as a better option than Tanev.

  9. This trade is very good, however, we still need atleast 1 more top 4 dman. and 1 top 6 forward…

  10. They got a more offensive player to compliment Hughes as a partner. This pairing could produce 100 points.

  11. Anyone remember the old Saturday Night Live commercial in the 90's, that had Sandler and Farley and was about Schmidts gay beer? I think of that when I hear his name

  12. I'm surprised that it only costed a third. Everyone knew Vegas is cap strapped so some teams would probably even bid on it for a top 4 d.

  13. Any Canucks fans think, a month ago, when we all hated this guy's guts, that we'd end up cheering for him? Funny how life works sometimes. Schmidt better be worth it because I'm not sure if they weren't better off signing Tanev instead for less money and term.

  14. Only 4 Canucks 3rd round picks since 2010 has played any games in NHL – they were Alex Grenier, Nikita Tryamkin, Guillaume Brisebois and Michael Dipietro. Tell me now if Schmidt for a 3rd rounder is not a larceny.

  15. I really like Schmidt and as far as the trade goes, it was a good one given that they lost Tanev and had a top four hole to fill. The problem with the Tanev out is that they are going to be missing his shot blocking machinery which has been huge for the overall defensive play and penalty kill. Someone is going to have to step up and fill that role. And that ain't going to be easy. We are going to miss Christopher Tanev for sure, I guarantee you that. Players like Tanev are always underrated and under appreciated. Most people over look that defense wins Stanley Cups, always. So far Jim Benning has been filling the gaps that open up from free agency and so he is been doing great so far, but he is running out of dough so he is going to have to start buying out or moving some of the older money out and make room for the new players like G-d and the Big Tuna. He has been doing great and is getting better at his job. I really like how he is aggressive and confident in his abilities. It is a very fine line between being reckless and aggressive. Go Jimbo Go.

  16. I think for Benning to trade for some tradable assets, he should focus on trading Sven Baertschi and Antoine Roussel first because these players are the replaceable assets internally, then either trade either one of Brandon Sutter or Jay Beagle, then money can be saved for signing the existing RFAs in the team.

One thing needs to be paid attention to is the left defencemen after next year. I can understand why Benning tried to get OEL because of worrying about the next left D after next year. That also means the young left Ds as his view, may not be good enough for Edler's replacement to top four Ds after Hughes.

  17. I think it's important to talk about ETAs in trades such as Schmidt for a draft pick to really understand the value. So the Canucks essentially dealt a player that is currently 16 yrs old for a player that is 29, a top 4 defenceman on any roster (perhaps top 2 on ours) that they will have control over for 5 years. Schmidt is ready to help you win NOW. If the Canucks had dealt say Rathbone to Vegas, he's a better return for them because he's likewise ready to help them compete NOW and would be, I think, controllable for at least 2 more seasons. But the draft pick in 2022, is not ready to help them perhaps for another 4 years given the nature of 3rd round picks. Possibly even 6 years depending on what player they take. Maybe 10 if it's a goalie. See? See the value now? Canucks took a 2022 3rd rounder and acquired a player that will help them NOW and conceivably thru 2024. That's massive return

  18. Only reason I think Schmidt will go with Hughes is because I don’t think Myers will go with hughes

  19. 1 for 1 he's an upgrade over Tanev in most stat areas, but I still like what Tanev brought to Hughe's game. And let's be honest, management wasn't considering Stecher as anything more than a stop-gap. So, all told this probably even's out the D problem. Though I'm not sure two rookie D will cut it this year. Will be interesting to see.
