Avalanche Make Some Moves to Start Free Agency. Was it Enough?

The Colorado Avalanche and the rest of the NHL got their free agency season underway, and the Avs made a couple of moves over the weekend to start filling the holes in their roster.

In typical recent Avalanche fashion, none of the moves were groundbreaking, as the club brought in Miles Wood on a $2.5 AAV deal with a somewhat surprising 6-year term. They also took a swing on a one year deal for Jonathan Drouin in hopes he can recapture the Halifax Moosheads magic he once had with Nathan MacKinnon.

But were there other moves the team could have made? Several players were taking short-term, low-dollar deals and you have to wonder if the Avs were in on those, or the player wanted to go elsewhere.

  1. That would be an F- for MacFarland and Sakic. ERod wanted only $1M more but they prefer to get the Devil’s worst forward from the playoff series against the Rangers and sign him 6 years!!! They are still laughing in NJ about so much stupidity. And then getting the old guy Jack Johnson back. The GM of the Avalanche is probably the cheapest GM in the history of professional sports. Look at TOR, they sign Bertuzzi and Domi just today. Vegas did not lose a single player, only the third goalie. COL still has no RW for the third line. They have achieved nothing! The bottom six still sucks and the third d pairing with shorty Girard ($5M for that guy – unbelievable!) and the 36-year old Jack Johnson. You don’t need to watch a scary movie, that d pairing scares the shit out of Georgiev and Francy. Stanley Cup chances? After these two horrific days – less than 10%! Here is the list of the victims of this F-grade management: Kadri, Burakovsky, Sturm, JT Compher, Evan Rodrigues, Eller, Englund, Newhook, and EJ. I probably have forgotten some, just mentioned some big ones, an impressive list. In the end, a one line offense with a very shaky third d pairing. Good luck with that, and you need a big bunch of that!

  2. This is off topic but I need your help understanding something. Is the Landeskog LTIR $$$'s been spent or is that something that can be used in the future?. In other words, did the AVS use the $7.0 to sign the new and existing players or does this somehow come into play somewhere down the road. I'm having my 73rd birthday tomorrow and I hate the fact that I don't understand this whole thing. I thought that we were going to be able to sign a top flight player using Landy's LTIR. I hope that I've been clear about my concerns. Thanks guys.

  3. I try and try but I'm struggling to get excited about this team next year. Most of the moves are projects, with only Colton being a known commodity. This team can win the West or miss the playoffs and it all depends on how the projects work out.

  4. This roster is mid. The avs don’t have enough to get past Dallas in the 1st or 2nd rounds much less make it to the finals.

  5. All of the guys that the Avs let walk were trash and needed to be purged. We just needed 1 more player to step up in the Kraken series and we would have taken that in 6, but none of the smaller, softer, bottom 6 speed players were anywhere to be found. Mack, Rants and Toews almost won that series by themselves. With the limited amount of cap space that CMac had to work with, He has added a competent #2c, retooled the 3rd line(may have 1 more signing to potentially add here) and added more depth than they had on the playoffs. Drouin is a huge gamble in that he doesn't cost much now, but if he doesn't produce then he will cost a ton to replace at the deadline. If things work out with Colton, Wood and Olofsson then the only real whole you have next offseason in adding a top 9 F if Landy can't come back. For all things considered, this was a pretty good UFA period for the Avs.

  6. So far, I'm happy with how things are shaping up and I think it is pretty much what they expected to happen. Let things settle out a bit here and now try to do some bargain hunting for another top 6 forward and bottom pair D that will sign one year deals on relatively cheap deals and they'll be golden. Let's just consider for a moment the idea of a Wood – Colton – LOC third line. That would be an absolutely miserable line to play against. Just need to find another middle 6 guy on a bargain deal (can we talk Tatar into $2mil for a year?) and another depth D on a cheap deal (several options out there like Dumba, Hamonic, M. Staal, Bear, C. Jones, and even Cal Foote). Keep in mind that we're also likely to at least get games out of guys like Malinski, Pavel, Foudy, and Olausson who could all show really strong and just take a spot, but you want NHL ready players in there as your primary option.
