The Detroit Red Wings Spend Big In Free Agency!

The Red Wings were one of free agency’s biggest spenders inking more than 10 contracts, despite the depressed market. Some of the biggest signings were to JT Compher, Shayne Gostisbehere, Daniel Sprong and Justin Holl. We’ll give our initial thoughts on these signings and go deeper in depth as the week goes on. #lgrw

  1. this team hasn’t looked this good since the 2008-16 team this season should stand out big with this 2023-24 team assembled by the captain #19 setting a new level for the club moving forwards with new additions?! 💪🤗💪👍

  2. I'm ambivalent. I don't think the additions guarantee a place in the playoffs. These are mostly middling level talents that barely replace the losses of Bertuzzi, Hronek, and Suter. I hope I'm wrong.
In the meantime, Johannson, Wallinder, Sebrango, and Newpower have all been told they aren't good enough, and Soderblom, Edvinsson and possibly Kasper will likely spend the next year in GR. I don't like it.

  3. Just a bunch of signings that don't make this team better. But 3 years from now we might be relevant according to Yzerman 😢

  4. It's easy to feel underwhelmed by a lot of these signings. Especially upon initial review. I really like the Sprong singing and hope he really pops off. Pretty happy about Lyon and Ghost as well.

  5. People also have to remember we are a rebuilding team located in not a top destination. We have to use the advantages we have and having cap space to maybe over pay a little is one of those.

  6. Bertuzzi and vranna better than anything that detroit got since the draft. Steve you better be loading bullets for a big trade

  7. It wasn’t flashy, but Yzerman did what he said he was going to do. At the end of the season he said in his press conference he wants the team to be bigger, heavier, and tougher to play against. Bringing in Kostin, Fischer, even Holl has definitely helped that. A lot of people hating on Holl, but after listening to his media scrum, I think being out of the microscope of Toronto is going to do wonders for him. Obviously management sees something in him and signed him for a reason, so I will let him play before condemning him. Plus, getting Gostisbehere is a bonus. Bringing in Compher and Sprong is going to help with secondary scoring. Hopefully we can get balanced scoring throughout our lines now. At the very least, our bottom 6 has definitely been upgraded. As for a goal scorer, a lot of people want DeBrincat, but I don’t think he’s the answer. His best years were when Patrick Kane was feeding him pucks. He wanted out of Chicago, wants out of Ottawa…how long would it be before he wants out of Detroit? Attitudes like that can be a cancer in the locker room. Plus, at this point, Ottawa hasn’t granted any team permission to talk contract extensions with DeBrincat. Before trading for him, a team is going to want some assurance in place that he will be locked in with them past this season. Plus, Ottawa wants a kings ransom for him (one or two draft picks, a prospect or two, and a couple roster players last I read)and would it be worth giving all that up for a player that has a history of wanting to be traded from both the NHL teams he has played for? Personally, I think Konecny would be a much better fit. With all the forwards Yzerman has signed, it feels like a trade is coming.

  8. Smart utilization of the cap. In 5 years his cap hit will be miniscule compared to where the cap will be.

  9. Alot of 1 year deals as the young players picked the last couple of years continue develop to reach the NHL level..I like the signings ..We got tougher at the Blue line and added some scoring punch down each line…Definately improved, though how much is a bit questionable..

  10. The incompetence continues.

    1. The Holl signing is about as bad as it gets. Go to any Maple Leafs board and they are laughing about this. The worst part of this is now they have 6 DMen with million dollar plus contracts Seider,Walman,Chiarot,Maata,Ghost., Holl before Edvinsson. Does this tells you Edv is not ready, or is Yzerman just ridiculous?

    2. Giving Compher $25.5M over 5 years is an ABSOLUTE joke. The Avs were offering 3 yr/3M per. This is simply a symptom of what happens when you have absolutely no offense and literally giving away your best offensive player (Vrana). Desperate times call for desperate measures.

    3. He makes a trade to buyout a guy? Meanwhile apologists turn to a career AHL player’s “potential”

    4. Sprong is simply a downgrade from Suter.

    5. Aside from the comments in item #1 Ghost was a pretty decent signing

I’m good with the goalies I guess

  11. People are down on the signing but I'm actually pretty happy. I don't like all the signings, and some are risky, but the team has more talent on it now than it did last season.

This is the first time in a while they'll have 6 NHL caliber defensemen, and that's before prospects potentially earn roster spots. Forwards is much the same, all the additions are basically improvements from the players leaving. Only Bertuzzi is better (at his best) and he has some significant asterisks with his health. Beyond that each line should be better next year, at least based on talent level. For goalies, there's a little hope and prayer involved that they stay relatively healthy but Reimer should be able to take the necessary load off Husso.

I think they'll be a better all around defensive team with more physical bite. The biggest problem right now is even though they should be better, the team seems like it will "feel" like last year's team so improvement may not be easy to see. They don't have the look of a team that will be hugely dynamic and I imagine that could get old for fans. On the bright side they actually may be able to package a couple players for a decently big swing in a trade without a huge adverse impact on their depth and they still have the cap space for that type of move.
