YZERMAN’S FREE AGENCY FRENZY (COMPHER, HOLL, GOSTISBEHERE) & ZADINA WAIVED – Winged Wheel Podcast

Steve Yzerman did not take a break after the NHL Draft and made another big splash in free agency this year – tune in as we discuss, analyze, and project all of the additions and changes in Hockeytown!

We start with JT Compher joining the Detroit Red Wings on a 5 year, $5.1 million/year contract, discussing where he fits in behind Dylan Larkin as a right-handed center, how this deal compares to Andrew Copp’s, and how the term will age, & more (4:40).

After that, the divisive Justin Holl contract, how it projects against the Ben Chiarot contract, whether he can offer RHD support behind Moritz Seider, what Steve Dangle had to say about him, & more (15:35).

Next, Daniel Sprong and the efficient goal scoring he can replicate from the Seattle Kraken (28:20), Shayne Gostisbehere and how he can be Detroit’s power play QB in a post-Hronek era (32:35), Klim Kostin being signed after Kailer Yamamoto was bought out (35:10), James Reimer and Alex Lyon being brought in to replace Alex Nedeljkovic and Ville Magnus Hellberg to backup Ville Husso (38:05), Christian Fischer coming in from Arizona, Gustav Lindstrom returning, & lots more (42:35).

To cap off the free agency talk, we give our overall evaluation of the newest Detroit Red Wings free agent class, the Yzerplan moving forward, what Yzerman has to do to add high-end talent & scoring (DeBrincat? Nylander?), whether there’s a roster jam that’s blocking Marco Kasper, Elmer Soderblom, Carter Mazur, & other rookies, & lots more (45:20).

More big news: Filip Zadina has been waived. Is this the end for Filip in Hockeytown? How did we get here from “Fil Their Nets”? (1:09:25)

Finally, Tyler Bertuzzi signs a surprising contract in Toronto (1:16:05) & plenty more before we take your question during Overtime (1:23:05) – enjoy this massive episode!

  1. In a note. I seriously think D-men wise we will have two prospects establish themselves out of the pipeline as taking over the spots of the top 6 by the end of next year one is a gimme; Edvinsson, but more speculated I also believe wallinder and/or Johanson will break through too

  2. Love how Brad thinks being a Christian and going public with your faith is now a "distraction." What a mental midget.

  3. Brad’s take on this years team seems to expect zero improvement from guys like Raymond and Seider… which I don’t understand. Shouldn’t we expect them to improve?

  4. Let us also remember that most of these signings have MORE assists than goals on teams WITH players who can score…. Wings don't really have any scorers…

  5. You guys should always have 90 minute videos. Problem with short videos is that you gotta stop playing video games or whatever your doing to find a new video that's interesting. I love long videos, the longer the better.

  6. I will say that, according to evolving hockey, Holl had the 2nd highest GAR of any TOR defensmen. Which leads me to believe when he does make a mistake it gets over blown by fans and media.

  7. Thank you for explaining this. It all makes sense to me now. We should be better this year.

  8. If the goalie additions are capable backups, that will be a huge upgrade. If the lessened workload helps Husso stay fresh, his totals may be more stable. This in itself could be huge and lead to less games lost due to sub .900 goaltending on the regular.

  9. Seems like there are some quality issues with this upload. While Brad/Ryan are talking a lot of words are missing, lips are moving but there is no sound for 1 or 2 of say every 10 words.

  10. The leans give it away Evan, you're bustin ass in a confined space. I'm on to you. That said, no one is freaking out so your air biscuits must be odor free.

  11. The signings make the team a better, deeper team in general. I've said this in other places but to me the biggest issue fans will have is while the team should be better, I think it will feel like the same team as before, which isn't sexy.

Holl wasn't my desired player, I wanted Clifton probably most, then Gostisbehere (but not Gudas) but I also think people are overreacting to Holl's signing. Holl/Gostisbehere should at least improve depth and shift players down to the 3rd pairing where they're better suited, notably Chiarot. If not, Holl is a decently better 3rd RD than the Wings had last year. Also, as easy as it is to say just don't make those signings, the Wings need players in those spots and ideally better than what was there before to keep moving forward. Rock and a hard place.

I'm actually somewhat excited for this year. The Wings currently look to be a more talented team than they were 7 months ago, incremental improvements, and there's a very real chance 1-2 prospects could force their way on the team in camp or during the season. When was the last time Detroit had to waive/move a player that was clearly NHL caliber because they had someone better? A lot could change between now and then but its something.

  12. I get the pessimism, …and the fact that the Wings were briefly in a playoff spot in February and then fell down is very encouraging imo. If you think about how/why that happened, it was the brutal games against Ottawa where the Wings were tossed around like they're the Leafs in a playoff game. Well…the team very plainly got tougher to play against with these adds, so maybe that doesn't happen again. The bottom six in particular look greatly improved to my mind and if special teams turn into even average for an NHL team…I could see a wildcard spot. It all depends on how well Boston, Florida, Tampa, Buffalo, and Ottawa stack up in the offseason. IMO a few of those teams are objectively worse than last year…while only the Sabres are clearly better.

  13. For the cap, the Perron and Gostisbehere contracts expire after this season and they alone add up to about 9mil in cap space. I think the expectation would be both to be expendable with prospects moving up during/after this season. Vrana is another 2.6mil off the cap after this season too. Between those 3 players and the cap likely expanding 5+ mil this year the Wings should have 25+ mil cap space after next season with no other moves. They'd obviously have more players expire, and would need to sign more than just Seider and Raymond, but the situation isn't dire.

The biggest issue with DeBrincat might be the AAV he'd cost this year. Unless they were able to unload one of the bigger contracts, and that would seem unlikely, that would potentially put the Wings very tight to cap for signing Seider and Raymond, and others. If they were looking to trade for a goal scorer yet this year, the best option would be for someone with term remaining on an ok contract. Without looking that probably eliminates nearly every "goal scorer" though.

  14. I remember the outcry when Larry Murphy came from TO to the Wings. Toronto hated Murphy's play but he went on to become a premier defender for Detroit. Holl isn't going to be coached by someone that just graduated from the OHL ranks. I believe Lalonde and staff can mold this guy into the type of defender they need. With the contract length Its in his own best interest to excel for the Wings and that can be a great motivator.

  15. John Gibson wants out of Anaheim. Should Wings trade Husso to Ana?! I like Husso, but Gibson is a show stop goalie.

  16. I understand the concerns regarding the cap space, but that's assuming Detroit keeps everyone. With expiring contracts, I think Yzerman is setting up a lucrative trade deadline. I like Fisher and Ghost, but that's exactly the type of player teams look for. Perron would fetch a 1st rd +. Kubalik and Sprong could offer depth scoring, but worst case, Detroit re-signs them.
That being said, I don't think anyone knows what Yzerman is thinking, but that's my best guess. Long term patience and flexibility. Keeping those players doesn't fit what he's been doing and he talks about the age of players who will be here when Detroit competes. Perron doesn't fit that timeline.

  17. I don't understand the surprise on the reality of the timeline.. we've known this since Hronek got traded, that it's the wave of prospects starting with Edvinsson that will be the push
