  1. Bottom line……Dubas was an idiot when he gave Tavares 11 million. NOTHING in his career justified that money. It created an obvious problem for all future negotiations for the team….we will lose Willy!

  2. Nylander is better than Tavares, who makes 11 million. In the playoffs he's better than all three. On the leafs he's kinda worth 11m.

  3. 8 million over the cap already. Even if they traded him now they cannot retain other players that have salary. Not a good situation for TO. The huge 4 salaries were gonna bite them eventually and that time has come

  4. Sign Matthew’s to 14 million, Nylander to 12 million, Marner 14 million, then rest of team can make league minimum

  5. Nylader’s first 4 playoffs were total bust years, then now he finally is able to score big deal. He has 25 points last 25 playoff games, to win a Cup you need guys to score more than that like Vegas who had 4 guys with over 10 playoff goals

  6. Nylander is more reliable post season because there's only so many guys that can be shut down. Everyone knows when you play Toronto, you need to shut down that top line…particularly Matthews and Marner. That takes a whole lot of pressure off JT and Willy…and obviously they don't get it done. Yes Nylander is very talented, …and he's not nearly as talented as Marner or Matthews. Nylander at > PLD/Meier AAV is no bueno. If he can't be had for less than 9m, then the Leafs should work on trading him…and do so quickly…while there are still contending teams that have the cap to make that work.

  7. honestly i dont blame nylander at all – toronto needs to work out a more team friendly way to pay players, if not, nylander should rightly want to get treated the same as the other top guys in terms of pay

  8. If your GM goes out and says the line "We can and we will" and then goes onto give 4 forwards 50% of the cap….it's time to pack it in and find another team to cheer for.

I have never seen a GM who was so wreckless with the salary cap and how people didn't forsee this entire situation is beyond me. If I was a Pens fan I would be worried about the potential cap hell that awaits that team.

  9. Screw Nylander. Let him go elsewhere. Let him learn the odds of holding a cup are so low he may get tougher for the next team. Playoffs matter and he's done little.

  10. Nylander has to go ,as long as you can get anything at all get it fast before he burns us and leaves for nothing, try to play defense or the penalty kill or take face offs and play center or throw a hit or block a shot hmm, he does none of those yet he cry's he is worth more? Good riddance to cry baby greedy kids.

  11. He's obviously not worth 10m and they set a dumb standard by overpaying everyone in toronto so not sure he will get that elsewhere in the league lol

  12. While I do think Nylander is a good player and I would be sad to see him go, the difference between him and Matthews or Marner is that the numbers from last season feel closer to his "ceiling" (we shouldn't assume that Nylander is a regular 40 goal scorer), while Marner has gotten close to the 100 pt mark multiple times. Matthews actually scored as many goals in less games, despite clearly having an down-year (relative to the previous three). I won't deny he's been a better playoff performer tho…

  13. It isnt fair to compare nylander's contract to Matthews and marner current contracts, sure as quality of player he deserves more, but compare to any other player on any other team. Just because marner and matthews were way overpaid doesnt mean they should do it again.
Nylander 9 mil by 7-8 years
Marner 10.5 mil by 7-8 years
Matthews 12 mil by 7-8 years
Thats my opinion, and I even think that is a bit high looking around the league for comparables. Nylander doesn't backcheck, he doesnt create plays, he is more of a finisher+. 9milx 8 i would offer, give him a couple weeks, then if no explore trade offers.

  14. This is all Dubas's fault and his inability to do basic math! Any genius knows you can't give 4 players on a 23 man roster half of the salary cap! I wish Nylander well with his next team.

  15. Annual reminder that the Leafs still haven't figured the whole salary cap thing

  16. Nylander looks great when he is up against second tier guys, put him on the top line for any stretch and he struggles

  17. Willie does not deserve a huge raise like hes asking cmon hes alright but not that good! One half descent season does give him rights to that kind of raise. The Leafs 4 to 6 core are being too much already and no wonder they have trouble filling the other neccessary positions. Pretty darn stupid if you ask me!

  18. Keep the big four for another season in order to win the Cup next June. Then, break up the four to suit cap space.
