$7.75 million a year for ORLOV!?

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Dmitry Orlov to a 2 year deal worth $7.75 million annually. In one of the most lucrative signings in free agency, the Hurricanes have upgraded their defense — which was already among the best in the NHL. Why did they offer such a large contract to Orlov, what will they do with their remaining salary cap? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

In this video, I’ll also touch on the Hurricanes signing goaltenders Antti Raanta and Federik Andersen, in addition to their interest in San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson.
**NOTE: I produced this video before the Hurricanes signed Michael Bunting. **

  1. They had to overpay on the AAV to get him to accept 2 years. Signing him to a long-term deal would bring down the AAV, but at his age a contract like that is risky.

  2. Well they got Bunting to fill out the top 6. I'd have preferred Bertuzzi but Bunting will do.

  3. Caps fan here, they wanted two things that Orlov brings. Powerplay offense, from the blue line, and shut down physical play. They didn't nickname him snarls for nothing.

  4. Hurricanes could just ride this season with a Elite Defense, no trades. We still can trade one of the D next year after the Stanley Cup Finals. Hurricanes won't get a big time package back in return. Not a first at least 2nds & Player/Prospect. I see several more moves! Carolina is not done yet.

  5. I think it's possible that Pesce is shipped to SJ in a package (possibly a 3 team deal) that sees Karlsson go to Carolina, and SJ retaining a little bit of his salary… I'm also hearing that the DeAngelo deal is still in play after July 9th (his 1 year anniversary with Philly)… I don't want to lose Pesce, but even without him if all those pieces are added, that's an absolutely nasty blue line for the Canes, that can go at you 4 lines deep, all night long… Bunting comes in to add a bit of offense, and a bit of edge that the team has needed… Still need another scoring threat, in my opinion, but getting Svech back will definitely help that… Also would like to see Necas put all the pieces together and do it for a whole year this time… Add in expected continued growth from Jarvis, and maybe (big maybe) the scoring answers are already in place… I do like the move to keep the goalie room intact, as well… Pyotr isn't quite ready to be 'the guy', as his playoff performance showed.. but it's clear he's close (as his regular season performance showed)… it's possible he's ready to be at the big league level permanently in a backup role (for now), but since he's still waiver exempt, it just makes sense to let him play full time in the AHL and to keep Raanta and Freddie in place (especially at lower salaries!)… Andersen put up a 1.83 GAA and a .927 SV% in the playoffs, we just couldn't score… Any team should be able to win with those goalie numbers… All in all, great start to the offseason for the Canes, and they're certainly not done yet…

  6. I think you answered your own question. The 'Canes will be the best (Defensive-Offensive ) team in the league. 3 Top tier pairings on Defense. Given the conditioning that Rod will subject them to.. A good chance they just grind opponents into the ice. and we got some meat to offset the hits.
