What Lessons Can We Take From Revisiting The 2018 Sharks Draft Class?

The old adage is that you can’t judge a draft class until five years after. It’s time to revisit the San Jose Sharks 2018 draft class and what lessons can be learned from a class that is no longer in the Sharks system. Also, make a “hindsight is 20/20” pick for each of the Sharks’ picks and who would have been the best pick knowing what we know now. Start with the first-round pick, Ryan Merkley, and what went wrong for Merkley and how the Sharks can’t ignore red flags going forward. Next, Linus Karlsson is shaping up to be a good prospect for the Vancouver Canucks, and why the Jonathan Dahlen trade was the Sharks trying to find a shortcut. Were the Sharks patient enough with Jasper Weatherby, or did they realize his potential? Is there still a chance that Zachary Émond can turn into anything, or is his lack of playing a sign? Finally, is John Leonard the best pick in the back for the 2018 draft?

  1. Imagine if Tavares didn't have Leaf jammies and we maybe could have kept Dillon as Merkley's veteran D partner he could develop with. Run PP2 behind Burns.

  2. Merkley is the epitome of when he's good he's great but when he's bad he's awful. Unfortunate that it didn't work out.

  3. Merkley was frustrating to watch. World of talent but the kid did not carry the fire. He did not compete. He should’ve had a chip on his shoulder playing in the AHL, instead he pouted and demanded a trade.

  4. I cant recall ever a time when the commentators talked so badly about a first round pick at the draft but in this case they were dead right about Merkley.

  5. The one thing I prefer about MG style over GW is focus and being deliberate with development. Of course, development fits the current team needs, but in DW's case, it wouldn't have cost them much more to create a great development system. I wonder if Roy Sommer was quite bad in his past few years, and not just in his last year. Some people just outlive their job. It's "nice" to keep people around, but that also fosters a culture of average performers.

  6. Bring Merkley back, if EK65 gets traded he can get a shot. He needs to just shut up and put in the work though.
