Greatest NHL comeback St.louis Blues vs. Toronto Maple Leafs [2000]

9/7/2011: RIP Pavol Demitra and Igor Korolev. Both players played in this game and were aboard the plane crash that killed the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team. The hockey community will miss both of you as well as the other 41 People who died today.

This is the greatest third period comeback in the history of the NHL. Only three times has a team come back from being behind 5 goals in the third period, and the Blues completed their comeback in the least amount of time. The Blues trailed 5-0 with 15:10 remaining in he game, and came back to score 5 goals to force overtime, and would then score 17 seconds into OT. Al Macinnis, who scored the Blues 3rd goal in this game, also played on the Flames in 1987 when they did the same thing, coming back from being down 5-0 in 15:44 and winning in Overtime. The other occasion was in 1982 in the playoffs between the Kings and Oilers. The Kings were trailing 5-0 in the third period of a best of 5 series that was tied 1-1. They started their comeback with 17:26 remaining in the 3rd. They eventually won the series, upsetting the oilers and wayne gretzky.

Aside from the historical significance of this game, it really epitomizes everything that was good about the Blues in the Late 90’s and early 2000’s. Al Macinnis with his rocket shot, Pavol Demitra and others explosive offense, the spirit to keep fighting even when they should be down and out, and Ken Wilson with the amazing Play by Play. It’s a shame this team was never able to bring the cup to St.Louis.

  1. This was great no doubt,… but I was looking for the five-goal comeback that was against the Kings. Starts off when Brendan Shanahan runs into the goalie and balls up against the boards waiting for somebody to kick his a$$. Didn't take seconds, next thing you know the goalie is shaken up and his enforcer is in the box for five minutes. Anybody, anybody…? After a bit, they show Brett Hull give Shanny a tired fist -bump on the bench. !!!LET'S GO BLUES!!!

  2. Lets compare this one with the LA/EDM one.

Both were 5-0 after three ending 6-5 in OT

This one is a regular season game versus a playoff game.
This one had the 4th and 5th goals scored earlier in the game

This is almost like saying that Mike Modano is the best NHL player ever to play. LOL your opinion is as good as thinking 2+2=5

  3. To clarify: There have undoubtedly been more important comebacks throughout NHL history, but from a purely statistical perspective this one is the best. In the 100+ year history of the NHL, no team has ever come back to win from a 5 goal deficit in less time than the Blues did in this game.

  4. Still remember when this happened like it was yesterday… REFUSED to let my dad change the channel cause he "knew" it was over but me being young and saying we we're gonna comeback. He caved, and the look on his face as I went bat shit crazy running around the house when they tied it and won it was priceless… #RIPDEMITRA and #RIPDAD (Just missed us winning the cup in 2019) #BLEEDBLUE

  5. I remember this game well. I was working 2nd shift and would record the games so I could watch them when I got home. It was always a struggle to not learn what the outcome was before I got to watch, but on this night I made it home and had no idea what had happened. I was just about to give up on it when Pronger scored and decided to keep watching. Amazing comeback

  6. Miracle on manchester…. la kings came back to score 5 in the 3rd against the oilers, Gretzky's, messier and the bunch during a playoff game. Kings also won in ot. Fuhr was in goal

  7. I believe I watched this game as a kid as I watched every game back then.

  8. Okay, I want to know how many of you magnificent bastards came here after Urinatingtree's Leafs Half Century of Failure?

  9. Just one chapter of the ILLUSTRIOUS, WONDERFUL, EXHILARATING, 54 years of FAILURE and SUFFERING for the pestilence known as the Toronto Maple Laughs!

  10. Thank God it’s not Joe Bowen. He’d have a heart attack blowing this lead. Maybe even Bob Cole too.

  11. As a Leafs fan, I remember this game. They weren't the same for the rest of the season after that. As much as As I hate to say this, anytime you see the leafs with a lead, remember, it is the leafs. They have been doing this for decades.

  12. Good ole Curtis "The Choke" Joseph. At least he wasn't on the Blues this time he choked.

  13. In my opinion the "Monday Night Miracle " was the best third period in Blues history. I was there and have never been at an event that was comparable. But I'll give this a close second.
