  1. Just seen the Leafs lineup for tonight, O’Reilly playing between Tavares and Marner! 👀

  2. Wild did this because Pillar was not going to be signed and is not a top 20 prospect for them. It also only cost them $74,000 in real money.

  3. NHL GM’s copying NBA GM’s playbook with all this overpaying at or near the trade deadline

  4. Pillar is not likely to be signed, so Minn would lose him for nothing at the end of the year.

  5. Good trade for Blues and Leafs but not for Minnesota. Why would one playoff team retain salary for another playoff team? Small chance of it happening but the Wild could be paying O'Reilly while playing against them in the finals (very small chance of that happening but still)

  6. At this point I doubt Pillar ever makes the nhl and the Wild needed to either sign or lose him so getting another 4th is solid. However, if they’re also retaining salary for teams with no cap so they can sign big name players I wish the Wild would shoot a little higher than a 4th. Sometimes it feels like BG takes too low of offers and in this case you have the Leafs by the balls, they can’t pay for ROR without financial help. Would have liked to get at least a 3rd.

  7. This is just another Nick Foligno trade to me. A past his prime forward who isn't going to provide much for that team, good luck Maple Leafs. Dumbas is definitely one of the worst GMs in the league, but good for STL for fleecing them.

  8. I don’t think it’s over for the leafs they got all that retained salary and they made the move very early. I think Toronto is still in Meier or chycuryn

  9. As a leafs fan I really love this move. Dubas gets a guy who can be a great shutdown guy and win faceoffs. He has the leadership and playoff pedigree to go far. Maybe with some better players his numbers take a leap

  10. I like this trade for both sides but Toronto did overpay to retain so much salary. If they fail to see playoff success this trade will be a massive loss

  11. I dont think dubas should be fired if they lose round 1. I think that at this point Dubas has proved he’s a pretty good gm, he’s built some of the best leafs teams of all time in terms of season point totals and hes done a pretty solid job in my opinion of finding bargain bin players to compliment their core. If the leafs lose in round one it falls on the guys on the ice more than it ever has, the lightning are also an incredibly good team it’s not like the leafs are going to be heavy favourites. Dubas gets hired elsewhere in a heartbeat if the leafs let him walk.

  12. This trade doesn’t really make the Leafs any more of a Cup contender than what they already were.

Toronto needs to address their defense. Don’t get me wrong, O’Reilly is a great player, but I just don’t think this was the right play for Toronto. It’s a flashy trade, sure. Probably an unpopular opinion, but I don’t see Leafs fans looking back on this trade positively.

  13. MIN traded away Pillar because they needed a body to make the trade work. Pillar is a prospect that MIN was not going to sign and use an SPC on. He has regressed since being drafted, has been mainly injured, and is now an overager.

  14. Points are secondary. He demands respect. He has the Will To Win. Exactly what the Leafs need.

  15. Agree, if Dubas was going to overpay, this is the guy to acquire. Regardless of any other big names, this is the player the Leafs need.

  16. Lifetime Leaf hater here… I think it's a steal for Toronto. Cup is won down the middle. Who can match up with them at center 3-deep?

  17. 2:17 "There's absolutely no reason for him to care all that much about draft picks at this point."
I don't entirely agree. If he blows up a franchise on his way out the door he could hurt his reputation and hinder his odds of getting that next GM position.

  18. It's only an overpayment when you neglect to consider cap retention. The Leafs shaved off 75%, lmao. That is GOING to cost you. Also, Acciari was thrown in! Just Acciari is worth a 3rd. He is actually a good bottom six player.

The Leafs HAD to take a swing. That first rounder was out the door regardless. They kept the FEW top prospects they have, and picks can be recouped when the Leafs inevitably trade one of Nyalnder and Matthews.

If you're a Leafs fan and complaining about picks, you seem to be missing the bigger picture. It's win NOW or wait another fcvking 50 years for a cup because this team is going to look very different in the coming two years. Fvck the picks.

  19. Haven't watched O'Reilly this season. His numbers suggest the 32 year old is on the way down. He is a half point a game for the first time since 2011.
O'Reilly is good in the face off circle but can he still even skate? He seems offensively at least to be the equivalent of Alex Kerfoot. That doesn't move anyone's needle. The Leafs may be a little deeper now at the bottom of their lineup which they need, but still doesn't move the needle.
Minnesota has one of the deepest prospect pools in the league. Pillar is a failing 21 year old prospect who doesn't crack their top 20. Did they have to include a player in this deal just so it could take place. They couldn't take on CAP space from St Louis and a 4th round pick from Toronto unless they gave up something tangible, beyond Cap space? Otherwise it just seems like they shouldnt have to give up anything. They dont really seem to gain much. I'd have left toronto swinging unless they provided more.
