Looking at 9 Contenders for the 2023 Calder Trophy

Beniers has to be the favorite, but can Wyatt Johnston force himself into the picture? Could a returning Logan Thompson steal the spotlight down the stretch?

  1. I told people that Martin Jones is average at best and that he’s only good for a certain stretch then falls off a cliff but kraken fans constantly said that Jones was one of the best goalies and that’s he’s underrated because of his beginning play of the season and look what happened! He’s back to being average at best.

  2. Eh, it's near impossible for goalies to win this, but IMO, of all the players on the board, Thompson has had the best season and the most impact on his team.

  3. I just don't understand why Skinner isn't in the lead (or Thompson if he plays more). HIs role and responsibility has been much bigger than Beniers (not at all to hate that guy at all, I like the guy) and he has been above average in that role, and by that arguement you can also say Owen Powers should be above.

  4. Sanderson is pretty much the #1 Dman on Ottawa now. He's been playing incredible lately, and they even put him on PP1.

  5. It’s Berniers to lose but this is why I think they should have a forward and defender rookie awards.

What Sanderson has done is incredible, he plays like a veteran and has passed Chabot and Chych for PP1 and plays shortyhanded.

  6. Just curious would Mo Seider’s rookie season be good enough to be the favorite for Calder this year? Are the rookies this year a step up or down from last year’s rookies? Seider, Zegras, Bunting, Raymond vs Beniers, McTavish, Maccelli, Sanderson

  7. As an Oilers fan, I'm obviously hoping Skinny gets some love but realistically speaking, I can't see anyone knocking out Beniers.

  8. Maybe a weird top 3, but I'd have Beniers, then Powers, then Skinner. No real standout outside of Beniers for me.

  9. If Bunting could be nominated for the Calder, I want Kuzmenko nominated too

  10. So Maccelli just passed McTavish. My hot take is that he'll pass Beniers because he'll be putting up more multiple-point games from now on. They play 3 times against Seattle and 1 time against Anaheim. Those are gonna be fun games to watch.
In case he passes Beniers, could he then win the Calder?

  11. The fact that Maccelli is a 4th round pick whilst all the other skaters are 1st rounders should be factored into the Calder voting. You made some good points about goaltenders and their late development; also if they are high draft picks they rarely pan out as solid.

  12. There are so many good rookies this year. That said, I’m still really happy that Seattle has Beniers, and I think it’s not only a testament to Beniers’ skill, but also the Kraken’s scouts. Between Beniers, Burakovsky, and Tolvanen, I’ve been really impressed by their ability to find guys who thrive in Seattle.

  13. This will never happen, but I think there should be another award specifically for rookie goaltenders.

  14. Guhle would be up here if he didn't get injured as much, similar ppg to Sanderson and Power, born in 2002 too.

  15. Power all the way. He’s at 35 points now and is a +11. Dude is a beast! So smooth out there! You gotta give him more love Shannon!

  16. Having less goals for Finnish player isn't out of normal, because most of Finnish players keep 2-way game more important than having more goals/points, most important thing is to win the games. If you think how many Finnish have capability to make 100+ points or 50+ goals, it's only handful of players. I'm pretty sure Beniers or McTavish will take it, but kinda shame that Maccelli won't most likely get it, Lundell had same kind of situation. Lundell was playing penalty kill straight away when he was rookie and so on.

  17. I love all your comments on every team and players. Now another reason Matty was on the ice more was his defensive play as well as only having 2 penalty minutes! Plus he should have played all 82 games had a certain Canuck not cheap shot him in the back. MB#10 should be the Calder winner!
