The Jeff Carter AND the goaltending problems strikes again…

This team continues to make no sense. Hunter is beside himself as the Pittsburgh Penguins lost yet again to the Montreal Canadiens but it wasn’t due to a lack of effort. Hunter starts the show by slamming the usual culprits as enough is enough when it comes to Jeff Carter. He looks at his plus/minus (Yes, you read that right) and how, despite it being a flawed stat, it shows everyone just how bad he is when he’s a -4 on the team for the game. He’s also in a fourth-line role! He then looks at what went wrong for Tristan Jarry and why Mike Sullivan seems to be gaslighting everyone when it comes to Tristan Jarry’s injury. There’s absolutely no way Jarry is healthy based on how he’s moving and how he’s playing. Usually, a player doesn’t come back from an injury and immediately stinks, right? After that, he analyzes what went wrong in the defensive zone as Brian Dumoulin, Jeff Petry, and Po Joseph had some brutal moments. He analyzes how Petry misplayed the Gurianov goal while also not liking how Petry stepped up at the blue line right before the Hoffman goal. For Joseph, Hunter goes into what he should’ve done to the point where the go-ahead goal should never have happened. Finally, he does offer some positives after what he saw from the top six in this game.

  1. For all the nonsensical moves and signings Hextall has done, I'm starting to think his biggest problem has been not addressing goaltending. It's been Jarry and DeSmith ever since Hextall took over, and that tandem is obviously not working out. Jarry is unreliable and DeSmith is fine in small doses, but falls apart when he plays a lot. Like you said too, I think Jarry is playing through something. It seems like all season he has had some mysterious nagging injury.

  2. Poehling and Bonino getting healthy and pushing carter and heinen out of the line up makes this 4th line way better. Scary to think they may not be back before playoffs. Lets see what happens with the defensive injuries. Seems like chad and freedman are the next man up?

  3. This is why I don't think Jarry is going to get the contract he wants from The Penguins. You can't trust him to stay healthy. Do you want to invest money in a guy for 6 years that can't stay healthy?

As far as Carter goes, I think Sullivan is starting to get the message. Carter was on the ice for 3 of the 4 goals in the first period, only played 1:43 total in the second and didn't even play 9 minutes for the entire game. I think Sully is getting fed up with Carter. I am hoping once Poehling or Bonino comes back he does what should have been done a long time ago, scratch him.

  4. The Penguins dominated the game after Jarry got pulled. Montreal goalie had a horseshoe up his rear end. The Pens easily win the game in a do over.
Plus Habs had our number all season so I'm not that pissed after that loss.
Bring on the back to back in MSG

  5. Everyone was happy when we made trades! We should have traded for a goalie! Jarry is trash!!! 4 goals allowed on only 7 shots? That's pathetic!!!

  6. I agree that Jarry hasn't been in really good game shape for a while. You have to blame the defense for a bit of it, though.

First goal, Pettersson turnover that led to a 3 on 1 break away. That's the only one of the four goals where Jarry saw the shot.
Second and third goals, Dumoulin gets caught out of position leaving Montreal players, alone, in front of the net, to screen, and/or get the rebound.
Fourth goal deflects off a Pens player into the net.
The sixth goal was a Letang turnover that led directly to an ENG.

Carter and Dumoulin need to be Kucheroved and put on LTIR until the playoffs.

This was the eighth game that the Pens lost after establishing a two, or more, goal lead. Add that to seven games where they were just, straight up, blown out…not even competitive.

What I don't know is…are the defense issues effects of Sully's system, or poor play by the team?

  7. Statistically, Jarry deserves the $6M that his camp is hinting at as his request for a contract extension. I have severe reservations, though, about his reliability and durability. The Pens' defensemen really need to stop pushing opponents into Jarry and DeSmith.

  8. If the Pens can manage to get two points out of the games against the Rangers, they may be able to push into third place, because of how weak the remainder of the schedule is, compared to the Rangers' schedule.
