The building was filled with anticipation on Friday night in Utica as the Comets battled the Toronto Marlies in game four of the best-of-five series in front of jammed packed crowd which was roaring from the puck drop. Thousands in attendance were aware that if the Comets fall short, the season ends and the hopes of a Calder Cup are dashed. If the Comets came away with a victory, they extend the series to a deciding game five in Toronto on Sunday afternoon. Despite scoring the first goal of the contest, the Marlies stormed back with three goals in the second period for the eventual 4-1 victory. With the loss, the Comets season ended losing the best of five game series three games to one.

Toronto proved convincingly that they were the superior team but they were beatable, and they will not win a Calder Cup this season. The Comets atrocious TEAM defense lost this series starting with game one. There’s no single defensive player or no defensive pairing that caused the downfall, it was a Groundhog Day TEAM defense that let up at least 2 goals in all four games on the exact same play! Odd man rushes with a wide open trailer down the slot who skates unopposed for point blank shots. Happened every game. Forwards not in position or hustling back to assist. This series was doomed in game one when the Comets gave up a 3-0 lead and two other leads in the game to lose in OT. Well after some rounds of golf there’s always next year and thank you for the effort the Cardiac Comets did have in many entertaining games. Let’s go Amerks! Knock out the Scrunch! See you in October 2024! 😢 PS: Maybe next season the Comets will actually put pucks on net rather than five wrap arounds, steal and cleared. 😮
