Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby receiveed his first game misconduct after a heated altercation with Kings defenseman Mikey Anderson… and his comments after the game were VERY interesting. The issue with NHL officiating has been a consistent problem for years, with players and coaches not knowing the standard for what they can and can’t do. The NHL is facing criticism from its biggest stars and the question is, how can the league improve the officiating and make it more consistent? All this & more in the video.

Oh bull crap they know and everyone knows the standards. Playoffs and regular seasons are different and have been for generations. Old time hockey was stomped on and now regular season has become shiny.
Crosby is a baby ngl
I stopped watching hockey 8 years ago because of officiating.
Robots
i have gonte to 3 of the past 4 home games ay Colorado and can confidently say the officals dont know what they are doing any more. I have seem hip to hip hits called trips and holds called hooks on the held player. now this is just what i have seen and i know im bais and i could be
mistaken but i dought it
Tbh I think I’m probably goin to be a ref if I can and I already ref u12 and 10 games
As a player or coach I would start to plead the fifth in every interview.. On all questions. Period.. Then the media would become mad as hell and maybe direct their anger towards the NHL leadership. Giving fines to someone who criticize refs is utterly stupid. Stating facts should never be illegal. If they worry about the reputation of the refs then get better refs. Being criticizes doesn't harm anyone if you learn from your mistakes. Being immune to criticism makes you immune to learn from your mistakes. Making you a horrible ref.
As a Caps fan, these players, and especially Sid, have a good point. I think there needs to be better supervision of refs by a nonbias third party who can either penalize or fine refs for bad calls or acting out of their professional conduct. Just to hold the leagues officials more accountable. The refs in the past were generally better, some were awful, but the inconsistency is a big deal. And if a team goes on many penalty kills because of garbage calls, even if their PK is excellent it will not bode well for them. I get that refs want the game to go smoothly, but at the expense of player safety and teams getting this frustrated with not knowing what rules should be enforced when they all should be, it leads to this amount of frustration. And at the same time a third party looking over officials could also make sure the refs are protected from harassment and injury. I think such a system would be fair. I know refs don't feel they have to or may not be required to explain calls, but the ones that do take time to talk to players about why things were called tend to have a better success in the league as officials and establish more respect and trust by other teams. Wes McCauley is an excellent example because he takes the time when appropriate to explain why calls were made, as a result players feel that they can talk in a relatively respectful tone with him and not risk being thrown out of a game, even when emotions and hormones are on overdrive, like in the playoffs.
Oh poor Crybaby… I mean Crosby. He instigated many penalties which he never received and keep crying to refs when it happens to him.
It's simple. Have a publicly available score card for the refs that includes missed calls, good calls, and bad calls. Track their bias when Refing different teams and players to show if that Ref has favoritism by calling penalties on certain teams more or certain players more. Have a review board challenge the Refs ethics. Allow players and coaches to criticize them and have post game interviews with the Refs.
Players don't want to say it, but I'll be the first to support getting rid of on-ice officials and allow camera reviews for everything.
Sid has had a career full of refs calling literally every little thing on his side and now he's mad he's on the receiving end. Must suck to see, but this has been the norm for decades.
The crazy thing about this is it isn't just Hockey… ALL major sports leagues are getting really inconsistent calls.
There will be no accountability. They're Union. They can do whatever they want with impunity.
Gary bettman better fix it in the next update
It was better when when hockey had clutching, grabbing, hooking, big hits and fights, it was easier to call or not call. Now that there's nothing offensive in hockey the ref are completely lost. lol
This video is just idiotic and all over the place glossing over the nuance of a fast paced game governed by two human beings with essentially one "camera" that has to analyze several events occurring in one second.
This isnt baseball folks.
And to quote ANYTHING from Marchand OR Crosby in the context of refs and penalties is beyond insane.
The league leader in crotch stabbings and face licking has ZERO credibility here.
Crosby literally severed a mans finger with his stick and didnt look back once. Hes a notorious b!tch who wines about everyone else when he doesnt get his way.
You gotta do better if this channel can call itself "hockey psychology".
Refs have been getting a lot worse in college and NFL football, too. But instead of "not wanting to influence" the game, it's the opposite. Go watch the LA Rams vs. Cincinnati Bengals game-winning drive. You have more penalties called on Cincy when the game was actually on the line than the rest of the entire game combined. If I'm exaggerating, it's only barely. I'm first and foremost a CFB fan and it's gotten ridiculous there as well. It's not so much an issue of not knowing the rules but more of corruption. It's not super common, but in some games it's pretty blatant. Other times it is just being plain clueless (Ohio vs. Buffalo 2013 "safety" being a huge error).
Yeah, you can't say anything about the refs in those two divisions, either. It's ludicrous that you can't call a spade a spade. Players and coaches shouldn't have have to pay a huge fine just because the NHL thinks refs shouldn't be criticized. Refs can toss a player but he can't say anything about it? You cannot let refs get away with calling games like that and rule enforcement shouldn't change based on who has the lead, who has the penalty kill, etc. A goalie makes a mistake and the other team scores all the time. Why shouldn't skaters making mistakes (or purposeful penalties) while down a man or on the scoreboard be protected by no-calls?
Not a Pens fan, but I have to actually say, that the Cale Maker injury, though unfortunate, was not penalty-worthy. If you look at the same play at the 3:24 mark of this video, you'll see Maker leaning/falling forward moving into Jeff Carter who was looking at where Marker had just passed the puck and had not changed body position…
Overall though, yea, officiating is inconsistent game-to-game, ref-to-ref, and even period-to-period… It's nothing new–I've been a fan of the NHL since 1974–the zebras were selectively blind back then as well…
The problem isn't the individual referees, it's their bosses. The NHL uses refereeing to try to control the on-ice product. The NHL doesn't ask referees to call penalties as they see them, they call penalties to control the game. The NHL insists that the rules don't change in the playoffs but EVERY hockey fan knows that they do. In fact the rules change based on who the player is, what the score is, what time of the game it is, and other things. Why can't the NHL let their referees just call penalties the same at all times during all games? Well that would mean that they lose control over their multi-billion dollar entertainment product. And therein lies the problem: the NHL doesn't care about the sport of hockey, they only see hockey as a means to an end. And the end is to make really rich people a little more rich.
Refs suck these days
Played the game for 35 years, competitively & recreationally. I've never did a player dirty. But I have been slashed, cross-checked, speared, hooked in the 'nads. I get it, sometimes it's missed. I hooked players' sticks & got penalties before hooking the stick was an infraction. But 1 broke my ALUMINUM shaft with a slash. Nothing. That was 30 years ago.
Bruins are so dirty this year its ridiculous
Easy fix, "accidentally" (NOT ADVOCATING JUST GIVING A POSSIBLE SOLUTION) have the blade of the stick hit their neck and head area….multiple times. As soon as they figure out players won't take their BS anymore, problem solved.
Small criticisms of refs shouldn’t be against the rules… And refs should have to answer questions before the press, keeping them accountable
The NHL has a mind of their own, a bias for what's called and what's not, likes and dislikes for certain teams, and they're most certainly not going to entertain any idea or more efficient way of calling the game fairly and efficiently.
"Dumber than a second coat of paint." – George Carlin
no, referees have been broken through basic stupidity and poor management inflicted by, and from the NHL, and has trickled downward right into the minors period.
I hope their days are numbered with advent of better AI technology. The system can better consistently call penalties with no bias through multi camera system and only have two refs on the ice for puck drops and controlling scrums/fights. They have been absolutely atrocious for a long time, utterly embarrassing
Reffs need to be held accountable
its not just in the NHL..
I love how Jamie Benn was the one getting away with throwing the guy around as the ref just casualy watched.
Has anyone tried turning the refs off and back on again? Because they are still broken.
Refs have to much power, and are pro American, seen it for years, it’s like there payed off! Gary Bettman probably has something to do with it. They need to be policed.
How do I complain to the NHL? How do I help to gain attention to reasonable complaints? Someone please help me find an outlet other than my wife…
A lot of the refs the past few years are really bad. Ex players who couldn’t make it. Jealous of the ones who can.
They should be investigated with rigour.
A young team like the sabres ? Wtf are you talking about ? Young
Bahahahahaaaaaaa.
The rules are clear. Everyone likes to say that being a ref is a thankless job. My question is why do you need to be thanks for doing your job. Right now the league is protecting refs and not holding them accountable for mistakes. If you cannot take constructive criticsm on your mistakes then you don't deseve the job. Referees must be held to standard, the league should review every penalty called and missed and review with the refs to prevent future mistakes. The refs should also have to attend post game interviews. You cannot expect anyone to get better at their job if you don't critique and improve.
In the playoffs the officiating is less strict? Dude do you even watch the playoffs?? 😂 You're off on that..
Why do the rules change in playoffs.
A lot of ppl are giving up on the NHL
