Pittsburgh Penguins trade for Mikael Granlund: Initial reaction

Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ron Hextal cleared out cap space over the last week as it became evident a move was on the horizon. On Wednesday, he traded a second round draft pick to the Nashville Predators for Mikael Granlund. Smitty and Tyler give their thoughts.

  1. It's bottom six mix up. Who cares, they can mix those around as much as they want. He is fast as heck and passes. Is blueger or Carter the play driver? It's an upgrade where you needed. We didn't need top 4 d man or top 6. The team is good and only was mediocre when jarry was hurt and bottom 6 didn't score points. A line if grandlund, poeling, and conner/archibald would be fast as heck and fun. Why hate a dude that scores 40 more points a year then any of our bottom 6 and cost 1.5 more than them. Still need to fix carter but it's bottom six man, that was stagnant. Why do you want a splash? Don't need top 6 or d.

  2. Bye penguins. Havenā€™t missed a game since 2005. Iā€™m done. Fire hextall, until then I wonā€™t watch.

  3. He will bebplaying against weaker competition (in theory) butbhe wont bebplaying with Duchane, Forsberg, Johansesn etc he will bebplaying with the ghost of Jeff Carter and whatever min wage guy takes McGinns spot…

  4. Granlund's contract means that Dumoulin will either not be resigned next year or will be signed to a cheap contract. Dumoulin's money will be spent on resigning Zucker and Jarry. Dumo has not played well this year and this may be his proverbial swan song so get ready to welcome back Ty Smith.

  5. Grandlund is not good, predators gm shouldn't have ever resigned him. His passing game looks more like a player that is scared to have to puck and it just looks good on a stat sheet because he has been on the top two lines.

  6. Chychrun was literally a perfect fit, had term left is good on both ends of the ice, and is going into his prime as a defenseman, and could get even better, and when his contract is up and the pens more then likely won't be making the playoffs you can just trade him to a contender and get back some of the picks that we would've given up to get him in the first place, and if he progresses maybe even more picks. Baffling decisions, but here's to hoping Granlund has a reawakening with the pens.
