Nylander is the least effective when it comes to Marner/Matthews. $10M is way, way, way too much. With the tough new look of the Leafs, the organization should try to trade him…although his asking price is far too high for not only the Leafs, but anyone at else.

Nylander is top 2 passer, top 2 shooter, top 2 skater with puck and top 2 playmaker in the team….maybe top 3 on a couple of these for arguments sake. And he does not deserve to be close to top 3 salary in the team?
Mr. Alberga makes the same shortsighted mistake as many posters. 8.8M for Meirer in New Jersey, USA is not comparable with Bill being paid 8.8M in Toronto, Canada. Period. The Leafs need to overpay at least 10% to offset less favourable tax structure in Canada & particularly in Toronto. So a fair aav for Bill, to approximate Meier's after tax net dollars is 9.5 to 9.7M. The rumour is he wants 10.6M x 7, so no f*cking way. He is not at the level of Matthews, or even Marner, although if he actually played reliable D, he would be worth it, but he doesn't.
Nylander is a one dimensional player who has to be heavily sheltered and he wants to be paid like he is one of the best two-way players in the game.

I could see 8.5 to 9 but 10? Perhaps a bit too high. If he really wants to win in Toronto, maybe he can structure the deal so it's not so high of a cap hit. He's worth that kind of money for sure. Let's not forget that Matthews is getting over 11 and he may be a bigger star for sure, I can't see why Nylander, who is a top line player, shouldn't command around 8.5.

In the Fall of 2018 Dubas had his best chance of landing a True # 1 D man in a trade for Nylander. Either Pesce or Slavin in Carolina in a straight trade at the time. Either of those two D men are light years better than Anybody the Leafs have had in decades. But Dubas caved and now here we are again.
If he fought as hard on the ice as he does off the ice he'd be worth 10 million.

Years and years of not being able to go deep in the playoff with top heavy talent and bargain basement supports should be more than enough proof that it doesn't work.
This situation with Nylander was created by Dubas (Shanahan) because if he would of stood up to the 3 Mathews Marner and Nylander , when they were coming out of their ELC contracts and held them to a 7 or 8 year contracts , you wouldn’t be in this situation the Leafs find themselves in!!! PS Marner is the next one to ask a contract that’s too rich

Sign and trade Nylander. Gotta get something in return for him. Might want to do the same with Marner and Matthews down the line. There has gotta be interest from other NHL teams in these players individually. Also, trade Tavares and retain some of his cap money ASAP to get something in return and free up more cap space. Combined they all have proven to be soft come playoff time. Blow it all up while you can still get younger NHL calbre players with qualites you want in return. Judiciously, dealing away the overblown financial mistakes made by Dufus is of the highest priority. What could the Laffs get in return for Matthews or Nylander from the Black Hawks to play with Bedard long term? And go from there. Investment in the core 4 have not brought about a requisite return. Time for the Laffs to remake their roster and for their professional scouts to start earning their pay. If I were in Treliving's place I would seriously consider this option and also be at least looking for
a new coach just in case. If not, he'll soon be fired anyway.
