Matt Rhule’s Husker Practices are Player-Led | Benning Bites

There is a debate during the Husker’s offseason about whether to prioritize substance or style. Coach Rhule aims to rely on a “culture reset” to enhance the team’s performance, which is reflected in the type of players they recruit. Damon Benning suggests that in the past, there may have been a preference for substance over better players. Rhule wants his team to be player-led, focusing on player-centered practices and fostering independence. The goal is to establish a common language and alignment between coaches and players. The cultural reset involves instilling self-sustaining qualities in the team, enabling them to perform effectively in real game situations without relying solely on the coaches.

  1. I think that's what's lead to a lot of our loses and problems. We're worried about reliving the old days and reliving the style. We think we're right there and old players want to relive their glory days through these new guys like an old father making his kid work out and play hard and win so he can get that rush again. Sorry, I loved those days too but they are long gone. Let these new kids build and relish their journey. If you started a new job and they had some old dude come in and tell about the million dollar deal with Apple computers he did 30 years ago….you'd be like who cares….Different time, different league, different players…..and it's got to be done a different way.

  2. Stars don’t matter. Look at Braylon prude for example he’s 6’4 190 with good film putting out nice track times and has the pedigree of a national championship winning father. How is his only other offer eastern Illinois? I’m not sure but I’m glad he’s N

  3. Invariably, wins weigh more than style and sometimes substance.
Having been around to remember the start of Bob the Builder, I see this era as basic history repeating itself here with Rhule.
From the training, organizing the players to bond together– and even criss-crossing the state to get the message of Husker Football out there… it's very similar in the plan design and both having their handprints on every aspect before they had Nebraska up & swinging for the fences again.

  4. Biggest issue and many Husker fans will disagree as they have to admit they were wrong, but leaving the Big12 was a big mistake. Huge mistake matter of fact.

Rhule will just need time. He’s the perfect fit at Nebraska.

  5. Many recruits are listing the culture, environment, and trust in the staff as reason for wanting to play at Nebraska. I trust the process. Matt Rhule and staff are doing things the right way. Now, let's hope they can can continue to develop players like he did at Temple and Baylor.

  6. Mr. Benning did about the most impressive block I've seen, on a kickoff return early in the '96 Fiesta. Tone setter, you could say. The defender took Benning's hit, took a couple of steps and dropped to his knee. '96 showed his talents, especially the '97 Orange with V-Tech. Definition of underrated.

  7. “We go back and forth” nah it’s just the Husker fan base is not a monolith. Some of us pump sunshine, others promote caution. What we should do is stop yelling at each other about it. Neither opinion actually controls the outcome of the game. What does it matter to other fans if I think it’s going to be a good season? They aren’t making bets based on my opinion are they? That would be weird.

  8. Good thoughts DB.
However, I think substance makes the players (at least team players). It looks like Coach Rhule is on that track.
