Don Revie’s name is rarely mentioned today. In a thirteen-year period, he elevated Leeds United from being a small, provincial and down on its luck club, to being one of the finest in Europe. He won six major trophies and his accomplishments stand alongside those of contemporaries like Bill Shankly and Brian Clough. A complex and textured man, though, history hasn’t rewarded him in nearly the same way.

  1. Correct about the southern media bias about Leeds. Revie was no saint but Leeds were no different to teams today with their tactical fouls oil fc in particular. Chelsea were a dirty team but are southern media darings. Every team has hard men like Tommy smith at Liverpool. Leeds were robbed like a few english teams were by corrupt refs in paris by bayern munich. italians bribing. refs is par for the course.
    Liverpool fan.

  2. Innovative, classy, straightforward, and brilliant – he took a side of no-hopers and built them into world beaters. If a manager did this today he'd need the backing of a wealthy oil magnate – or a financially sound business to achieve it. Revie was hated because he was so successful and light years ahead of the opposition. Who would finally catch him up in the late nineties, early 2,000s. If you win once you get a slight nod of approval – do it twice and there's a few raised eyebrows and some silence. Keep winning in a way that can only be likened to a 'Roman army Phalanx' conveyor belt – they'll bloody well hate you for it.

  3. Watched him play for Leicester in the FA Cup as a #8 alongside derek hines. ken chisholm, malwyn griffiths and right footed pacey left winger (first name escapes me) small. I can remember this but can't remember yesterday though. He was considered stuck up, a skilled player but not liked.

  4. Something tells me that the person beind this a Leeds hating press-hack. Dirty Leeds? Well how about Chelsea that the hatchet man in Ron Chopper Harris, Liverpool too had their hard men, it boils down to comparing the wages of a 60's footballer today, totally different. Huge files on away teams? Hang didn't Leeds just have a guy who took them out of the Championship with what many called journey players? Yes watching watch you eat is a part of the game now, from Arsenal to Manchester United and Manchester City and most if not the premiership clubs doing the same. Very little mentioned of the 74 team, comparison to the Liverpool team of the late 80's and Manchester City title winning sides. Very easy to kick a man who is no longer with us. Hard training by ex Army Les Cocker made Leeds a very fit team.
As the old song goes nothing has been proved, safe hands is still un welcome at Leeds, many thought it was because we had a young Scottish keeper coming through in David Harvey and Sprake didn't want the competition.
1 last thing a team of 16 plus internationals in the late 60's to early 70s, proper full internationals, not just 1 games wonder's for a small country. Think about that when you have a go at Leeds
P.s to writer of this watch Footballs hard men of the 70s before you say it was all Leeds.

  5. make sure you say the stories that Revie was tryning to bribe managers to let them win…sprake the former goalkeeper is banned from leeds from saying the same….pathetic….

  6. imagine if a manager came in and tried to change a premier leagues team colours today they'd be out the door as fast as they came through it!

  7. The work and deeds of Revie are very similar at what Osvaldo Zubeldía achieved with Estudiantes de la Plata in the 60s, they even share the fame of being "dirty" teams

  8. Love this video length. Obviously takes longer to produce but 15-20 minutes means you can get truly invested and understanding of the topics mentioned. Bravo

  9. Great manager but Revie was never forgiven for dumping England and running off to Arabia, That's why people still talk about contemporaries such as Clough and Shankly but, apart from Leeds fans, nobody talks about Revie.

  10. Leeds were , at that time, a very accomplished side, but they were dirty, sometimes filthy!.

  11. A little bit of Trivia: Don Revie and Brian Clough were born just a few streets away from each other in the same part of Middlesbrough (Grove Hill).

  12. I recall reading about Revie's Leeds that, whenever they went 1-0 up at Elland Road, all the ball boys would mysteriously go missing, so whenever the ball went out of play there was a lengthy delay in getting it back on the field, wasting precious time. I don't know whether it's true or not but I like to think it is, that's some god-tier shithousery.

  13. A fair summation. Highly ambitious, intelligent, but a somewhat pessimistic and superstitious nature always made me think Gary Sprake was telling the truth, and at his core, despite the loyalty he engendered, Revie was both cynical and corrupt.

  14. I worked with a ex professional footballer who had a long career. He played in a Cup final and quite a few seasons playing in the old first division. He was just the complete opposite of many of his team mates who were very flashy. He knew I was a big fan of the club he played for and we had opportunities to speak about his career. I’m not naming him as I haven’t seen him for a good few years. We are both pensioners now. We were talking about Leeds and there reputation. I told him about how I remembered seeing Bremner being held back by team mates in the tunnel after the team had gone out to look at the pitch, a fan had abused Bremner, Billy wanted to sort him out. That Leeds team were intimidating Andy pushed the boundaries of fair play but my god they were good. My colleague laughingly told me that the team were discussing with a ex Leeds player who was a regular in their most successful years about how after playing Leeds their legs always felt sore and had tender irritable scratches on them The Leeds player told them that in the old days when nail in studs were still common. They would remove he top of the studs exposing the tips of the nails. Then glue on cardboard they muddied to make it indistinguishable from the remaking studs. Then after their studs had been checked by officials prior to the game they would scrape off the cardboard off on the metal grills designed to clean mud off the boots as they trooped out to the pitch. I told that’s awful. No he said, bloody clever. He also said the biggest cheer he ever had was wining a 50/50 with Norman Hunter. He said he saw Hunter coming in high and just went higher. Hunter had to go off injured. I got a lot of praise for that he said. Different times.
I collected autographs as a kid and that Leeds team were the ones to get but usually as they got stick leaving the ground to get on the coach, they didn’t hang around. However a friendly coach driver told me he was only taking them to the local railway station to try there. We ran to the station bought a platform ticket and found the whole team in the platform cafe. They were so accommodating signing everything chatting away really made our day couldn’t thank them enough. Always begrudgingly had a soft spot for Leeds after that. Had similar experiences thanks to that driver with the Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs teams. Though for reasons l didn’t then know, Jimmy Greaves waited in the pub across the road before running out to get the train with us behind still trying to get him to sign.😅

  15. Malcolm McDonald during a Q&A said something like 'he didn't want me in the team and told me so. He said he felt pressured to play me and would drop me as soon as I failed. Prior to the England-Cyprus match, I spoke with a few of the players who were shocked and rallied together to spite him. They said 'every time we're on the attack we'll pass it to you'. We won 5-0 and I scored all 5'.

  16. The former Newcatle United player and legendary Sunderland manager Bob Stokoe always claimed that when he was managing Bury Revie attempted to bribe him to throw a match against Leeds. Stokoe was a quite decent and very modest man who was as honest as the day is long. He had absolutely no reason to manufacture such a story about Revie.

  17. Dirty leeds, done dirt cheap, dirty leeds, done dirt cheap, dirty leeds done dirt cheap, dirty leeds and there done dirt cheap, dirty leeds and there done dirt cheap.
