My first NYR game was during 1978 was when Don Murdoch scored the OT winner against the Sabers in MSG. It's so funny watching Nicky tossing Jim Schoenfeld around like a rag doll.. LOL !
Funny.. reading some of these comments about Nicky not fighting anyone noteworthy. He NEVER backed away from a fight. Why didn't some of these "heavy weights" call him out?. Why? Because they respected him too much.. Could throw a body check with the best of them, was a great teammate and fan favorite. That's what this current NYR team is missing.
I'm a Flyer fan and for those who don't think Fotiu was one of the best all time fighters you're just wrong. Name any of the tough guys that played when he played that he ducked….none, they ducked him. He beat gillies, holmgren, wilson, f'd craig coxe up, Tim Hunter said he was the toughest he ever fought. Fotiu wasn't a goon, he fought when necessary, and he wasn't a bad player, not a gifted scorer, but a very effective defensive forward, relentless on the forecheck, and one of the faster skaters out there.
I know this is heresy, but the Rangers' Ferguson jerseys aren't all that bad. I like the away jerseys better than the home. I was surprised that Schoenfeld hung in there fighting Nicky.
I recently heard Schoenfeld held this fight against Nick and wouldn't promote him and actually hated Nick and looked to ruin his career with the Rangers!
Umm, Nick landed 6-8 great shots, Shonny landed 4 or 5. Shonny ended up on the ice. Nick won, but Christ. Jim did pretty good against one of the toughest ever.

And to think that fight was caused by Jim saying, "why don't ya have another donut, another donut ya fat pig!!?"

Nicky bested him, Schoenfeld was lucky Nicky was not a crazy man, he had him on the ground and didn’t try to really hit him…Nick is an honorable guy.
