It’s probably the reality that most people wouldn’t want to see, but one that presents itself as possible: the Pittsburgh Penguins drafting the projected 1st overall pick Alexis Lafrenière at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Yeah, it’s possible. Despite the fact that the Pens’ 2020 1st currently belongs to the Minnesota Wild via the Jason Zucker trade, a condition on the trade indicates that the Penguins would have the option to keep their 2020 1st if they end up missing the 16-team 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Well, that possibility does exist, and it will be at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The current NHL Draft Lottery odds, go in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. Imagine if the Penguins got Lafreniere? That means they could go out and trade Makin for ANOTHER 1st rounder with some A level prospects and start to re-build on the fly! So they will not miss a beat and still be competitive while teaching these young players how to be all-stars! So unfair!!

  2. Yeah. That would be freaking fair! This is why most hab fans are hoping our team loses. Hab’s should trade for pens first round pick!

  3. I'm from Rimouski, I'm a wings fan and I hate the Penguins , I watch Crosby going to them and it sucked but they were so bad it was ok, it sucked even more in 09 obviously but its part of the game. BUT THIS SHIT .. If the freaking Penguins gets Lafreniere I'll lose my shit lol

  4. Wont watch this one bud. I'm sure it's good lego, but I cant put myself through that. It's already my worst nightmare.

  5. I’m going to be so pissed if this happens. They don’t deserve to have an immediate replacement superstar before they even lose their current ones.

  6. If Detroit is rooked out of 1st, 2nd or 3rd overall I hope Yzerman can keep his composure and does not decide to reach for someone at pick #4.

  7. going to be honest, i really dont think this would be an end of the world scenario. yes, pittsburgh has been competitive over the years, but there was a point not long ago that they very nearly ceased to exist. it took the legend mario lemieux to save them and he managed to right the ship. as much as i am a habs fan, pittsburgh is one of the teams that define the league, and they haven't had great luck with injuries and fluke medical conditions…ect. i have no problem with them or any other team having that one lucky break.
