    > Let’s conceptualize this: the Kings are losing two up-and-coming prospects, Iafallo, who was a beast in the regular season and even more so in the playoffs, and a second-round pick in another deep draft class next year. It’s certainly not a move I would make.

    What a terribly biased article.

How do you give the Kings, a bonafide Stanley Cup contender, a C- for sacrificing some of their prospect depth to boost an already excellent team, while giving the Canucks a B+/A- because they didn’t have a disastrous offseason like they typically do?

The Canucks deserve a flat B for not making any egregious mistakes, that’s about it. They made the moves they should’ve made, but they don’t deserve a B+/A- for surpassing incredibly low expectations.

  2. I think they’re a little high on the Canucks’ off-season so far. I would give it a B, maybe a B+ since they showed some restraint in not giving out any long or expensive contracts. I would only consider bumping it up to an A if everyone they added fit well into where they’ve been slotted in so far. And arguably, all three of Cole, Soucy and Blueger are being pencilled in a little higher than they should be.

Agreed on the Kings trade though. From their perspective, they probably see it as they gave up some quantity for quality, except I don’t think Dubois is that good. So far, he’s basically on a Horvat-like trajectory. But Horvat needed a massive outlier season to net the trade return he did. I don’t think that’s a good contract either. Both Horvat and Dubois are being paid 1C money, while neither is that good defensively and generally score at an above average 2C rate.

Agree with the article, we’re kinda #1 by default IF Connor Brown doesn’t pan out. LA lost Vilardi, Iafallo, and Kupari for a headache in Dubois at 8 years $8.5mil. Honestly I’d rather have Vilardi and Iafallo. Plus their goalies are Talbot and Rittich? Rough off-season for LA.

    I’d give it a C+/B-.

Yes they addressed holes in their defense with Cole and Soucy. But I still think the Canucks need to add another higher end defenseman here too.

Also, Blueger is a good player but idk if he’s what we needed for our 3C. I hope he works out but idk if his offensive production is good enough, or if he can step into the top 6 if Miller or pettersson get injured.

Canucks should look to add there still if they can move a winger out.

I do not agree with the writer at all. She needs to take her Homer lens off.

How did Fiala not work. He played over a ppg and was second in points with only 69 games played.

I can’t give the Canucks off season more than a B, and thats grading on The Benning Curve. They still have to leap frog 3 teams in the division.

Blueger isn’t a third line centre either. His ice time is right on par with PK 4C’s around the league. He’s a better 4th C than Aman right now but that doesn’t make him a 3C.

    Issues unaddressed or unclear:
    – Still have cap congestion
    – Roster congestion at wing
    – One right handed Dman that can make a pass, skatebackwards and do crossovers (It’s even still fair to have questions about Hronek)
    – TBD on whether the PK will be improved when we said all this same stuff last year about Lazar and Mikheyev
    – Still relying on Spencer Martin to be a 25 game backup

I just don’t know how people suddenly are so confident about this blueline. Everyone is really really high on a pair of 3rd pairing guys stepping into the top 4 for some reason. Especially one of them playing on their offside which always goes really well for this team. Getting Bear back would help if that circles back around. Or if they managed to somehow cap dump some money and get Dumba on a Vanek-cheap “so you’re left in free agency hey?” contract.

Honestly, I’m just finding out there’s an Emilio Pettersen and the fact that we aren’t in on him has basically ruined my summer.

An “A” should be for overachieving.

They overachieved *low expectations*. Aka, not impressive by any normal metrics.

Solid B, but nowhere close to an A. That A is definitely due to perception and narrative.

    Grade inflation nowadays…

This thread has really good discussion

Many people not wanting to give the Canucks a high rating but I would do so based on the following: they did as well as they possibly could have. We got 2 of the top D UFAs to sign reasonable, low term contracts. This fixes our biggest weakness. If these guys had gone elsewhere we’d have all the problems we still do and be totally screwed. So in the context of an imperfect reality, I would give this offseason an A so far, especially if it’s later coupled with moves to clear space like trading Myers.
