Capitals May Be Looking at a Season without Backstrom After Hip Surgery

Do they use the money they can now put on LTIR to improve their roster or do they go into some sort of retool/rebuild?

  1. God, I'm so saddened by this news. I barely remember a time without him. My earliest hockey memories are of Ovi's rookie season. I love Backy. I hope he does what's best for him. Stay healthy, friend.

  2. LaPierre and McMichael both looked great last year. I think, with more ice time for each of them, they could shine bright.

  3. If we don't find a way to keep Nazem Kadri this offseason, I can see Washington being a big player for his services. Kadri is an ideal 2C and this year has shown he can also excel as a 1C, which of course would perfectly fill the void left by an injured Backstrom. The Caps don't necessarily need the grit that Kadri provides, they already have plenty up and down that roster, but if they feel it wouldn't hurt to have more then that's also another reason to pursue signing Naz. Of course I'm hoping Kadri re-signs and remains an Av moving forward but unless he takes a major discount he's gone and he'll be a tempting UFA option for a team like the Caps looking to fill a top 6 C role.

  4. I wish you were gm of a team making trades and your team would instantly be my favourite. Thanks for all the awesome vids !

  5. The tennis player Andy Murray had this op a couple years back (first top singles player to have it) – he's just making it back into the world's top 50 in the rankings now, before the injury and surgery he'd been in the top 4 for years, but he says now he's just happy he can play at all.

  6. I think top end talent hasn't been the problem, the caps need to use that money and get some good speedy depth for the bottom 6 and get a veteran goaltender who doesn't give up stinky goals

  7. Clearly there is a bit of depth for the centre but what's stopping caps using this money for a few other players? They need to get quicker because they've been very slow middle part of the season. Couldn't watch them at times.

Let's go out and get Robertson from Dallas
    Copp from Jets

And splash out on a goaltender. Maybe Giorgiev or Husso?

A younger experienced blue liner would be nice for a back up too

  8. The performance, I say that lightly, by Tampa last night, was as poor as any team in a finals in a long time. Not sure if Tampa can bounce back from that result.

  9. not really up on the new kinds of hip repair, but why would Backy get hip resurfacing instead of a hip replacement if he was giving up on the chance to play?

  10. The Panthers lose the series, if Wilson doesn’t get hurt, it was a different series once he went down.

  11. The only thing that confuses me about ltir is this- can the Caps go out and spend Nickys $9.2 THIS SUMMER, or do they have to wait until the season starts and THEN the $9.2 frees up?

  12. Gaudreau would be nice, but the Caps need a C. If we signed Gaudreau I would have to think Mantha or Oshie(prob Mantha) gets traded, because then we would have a third line winger making over $5 mil a year

  13. If you'd like a singular example of Backstrom's ability: Go watch Ovi's goal from Game 5 of the SCF against Vegas.

As you're watching the replay – specifically from Ovi's POV – remember: Backstrom had a broken hand.

  14. Off topic: I think M.Johansson re-signs with the Caps no matter what. He always preformed well with the Caps imo. My prediction is a good value deal coming up soon!

  15. Picturing Backstrom in a suit behind the bench feels as weird as picturing Mario without a mustache.

  16. Hip replacement is not just for old people . I had mine done at 41. Life changing surgery. Gave me my life back.

  17. Good news is you did kinda outplay,& almost beat the President trophy winners. Bad news, the President trophy winners are mentally weak,& soft frauds themselves-in many different ways-or at least pretenders,if fraud is too strong a word-lol.

I'm exaggerating a bit,& it doesn't mean they can't grow from this-Colorado,& TB had to learn similar lessons-though not to the same degree. I don't quite remember thinking the Avs rely totally on talent, built a bunch of bad habits in the regular season,& usually overcame it,by showing up for the 2nd half of many games-but usually pulling it out-simply cuz they had far more talent than the opposition. And were better at gimicky 3 on 3,& shootouts. I remember when we couldn't ever win a shootout,or 3 on 3.

We also had to learn the difference in playoff hockey,& mental side of it. But not to actually try hard in most the regular season. Or that you can't get down 3-0 every night,& solely rely on offense, talent,& coming back on vastly inferior talented opponents. That's what I mean when I use words like soft,& frauds.

If I'm a Washington fan,I'd wanna start the rebuild. But Ovechkin probably won't be down with that,& that guy has earned the chance to try to reload,& go for it again. But I don't see it-with Washington. They can make the playoffs, but long ways from being contenders, with teams like NYR.

  18. I may be biased but this might be the year the Sabres make their return to the playoffs. Boston is falling apart, Washington is feeling their age catch up to them, Pittsburgh could be a completely different team if Malkin/Letang leave. If Buffalo could bring in a Campbell/Kuemper/Husso I could see them making a run for a playoff spot next year

  19. Eller and Hagelin are too far past their prime. Replace them with the younger guys now now even if there’s a short term dip (but I doubt it). Oshie still has gas in the tank- best player on the ice for the caps vs florida. Wilson-Kuz-OV is one of the top first lines in the league for several more years. Retool the 2nd-4th lines.

  20. This is sad, He's a brand player when you thought capitals you always thought Nick and Alex. He was really effective in the playoffs though so if he does come back there is hope that he could.still produce

  21. If he retires he should stick with the coaching staff and become a PP coach. That way if Caps win another cup he'll still get a ring.

  22. If anyone can get back from it it’s Nicky such a smooth skater never was the fastest but such a genuine smooth patient skater such ease
    Kesler
    Was more a power skater
And jovanaski was defensemen great skater
It all comes down to Nicky and his rehab he has the best doctors family friends etc so time will tell we’re all hoping for the best god bless you on this journey ❤️
Your health is first and foremost and being with your family hockey is always 2nd so with that being said
God bless and wishing for the best❤️🙏

  23. Ovi and backy both heading to the hall of fame no doubt
They would be dumb to not put niklas backstrom in the hall of a fame is champion forever ❤️
