Where are the Dahlin and Power extensions?

A few months into the Sabres offseason, we’re still waiting for contact extensions for Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power. Sneaky Joe goes through what we should expect from Dahlin’s extension in terms of money and timing. Will we get one before the start of the season?

Plus, Joe talks Owen Power’s extension and why he does not think we’ll get one until next offseason.

Also, why the Alex DeBrincat trade is bad for both Ottawa and Detroit.

  1. Dahlin's contract announcement will be a special event with Adams and perhaps coach Granato when Rasmus returns to Buffalo

  2. Donโ€™t extend Power until he proves himself this year.
No one hit wonders at this level. No more Tyler Myers overreacting ok?
He needs to prove himself as a Defender not just a 4th forward. Rasmus this year, maybe Power next offseason. He will likely flourish with EJ next to him or around the Dmen in general.
Letโ€™s not โ€˜jump stupidโ€™ and sign him too soon.
    Stay the courseโ€ฆ.

  3. Yeah, assuming $10M for Dahlin then ~$7M x 8 years is about as high as I'd go for Power prior to the season starting. The likelihood of him outperforming that contract is enough to off-set the risk of a long contract based on this few games played, and it being the the first big contract for Power makes him more incentivized to take a lower number just to be set for life financially. Otherwise Adams definitely should wait for the sample size to double and get a better grasp of the direction Power is developing in, the contract can't increase that much even if he has an amazing second season.

  4. Dahlin 10+ per x 8 …..Jack got it for nada lol…..Dahlin is more important than Jack never was….
Owen Power maybe 7ร—7.5-7.75 per year

  5. "…we're still waiting for contract extensions for Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power." We're? No we're not. There is very close to ZERO doubt they will be signed when they need to be signed. You're making content up because there's nothing much to write about right now.

  6. 9 mill is ridiculous ๐Ÿ™„ ๐Ÿ˜’ ๐Ÿ˜‘. No way no way 7.75 max especially after one pro season.

  7. "We are a Sabres show of course…" That's debatable when you spend the first 8 minutes talking about Debrincat and Detroit. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. The Sabres have never had a 1,2,3 punch in their history like we do with Dahlin, Power and Samuelsson. All of them collectively should be the cornerstone of our franchise. I see Darlene getting signed for about 8ร—10. Power may take longer and it might not even be the season, but assuming no injuries happen, and he keeps on his current developmental curve, he should be going for about 8ร—8.2. The sooner you get him sign the better the longer you wait most likely the price tag is only gonna go up. On the flipside of that I donโ€™t see power at 20 years old refusing $60-$65 million. Iโ€™m confident that it will all get done eventually.

  9. Joe, everything you said about the Red Wings and Senators situation is spot on. I think both teams are spinning their wheels and either of those teams could be last place in the division this year.

  10. I read that dahlin is currently overseas back home and that's why the extension hasn't been signed yet. And I'm guessing we are waiting on the power extension until dahlin is locked in. Both players are obvious core pieces and both should be locked in long term. Don't play hard ball to try and save a million on these guys. Get them locked in before it's too late

  11. Dahlin should get 8×10.5M. The dead cap era will end after this season and it will be going up. Dahlin is only 23 and near the mid to end of his contract, this will appear โ€œcap friendlyโ€ and heโ€™ll likely be at or below the top contracts among elite defensemen.
