Nole basically playing more like Fedal in 2023 against Wawrinka, which was always the right thing to do.
love this analysis! thanks! and so much to learn from this observation.
I love Carlos, however. I want Nole to win Wimbledon. I thought Nole was awesome in this match , absolutely awesome. Go Nole go. How could anyone not marvel at his achievements after his treatment by the covid crazies. A marvellous athlete, a marvellous man,❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Never has there been an inevitable result like this match. Right from the first serve, it was just a waiting game to see how fast Novak can finish it off.
I found this wimbledon boring in the sense that we all know who's going to win, there's not much surprise about that.
That 2015 NO1E arrived WORN OUT to the final, beating FAKEdal and murray in 5, two hard matches.
The 2016 us open NO1E made that final by luck, out of FORM.
NO1E is by FAR better
Some of that old school Stan came out in that third set, he hit some haymakers like he used to against Djokovic. Djokovic just nodded his head applauded Stan and got back to business though!
Cry fedtard
Thanks Gill. Great analysis! Rhythm and contact points. Stan the disruptor- he certainly was in some of those epic wins against Novak! Cheers.
I'd like to think that the version of Warwinka who destroyed Djokovic in that French and US Open Final would beat any version of Djokovic, or anyone else for that matter.
Am I the only one who felt that Djokovic would win 7-5 in the tiebreak despite him going down a break in the tiebreak.!? It's weird how he's never rattled by the score.
12th consecutive tiebreak.
Of course Novak was a huge favourite yesterday, but Stans poor first serve just made the match extremely one sided.
Too bad Stan came out the 1st two sets really just massaging the ball around – which is never going to work against Djokovic. At least in the 3rd he started swinging with some conviction
Right in the center … Gill says that Novak's game is more mature, but his analyzes are just like that … excellent analysis … as always … and getting better and better.
I can't say I recall the other 9 tiebreaks – but I do recall the Ruud one. Comparatively, I felt like Novak made more errors, but interesting to hear that you chalk them up to forced errors. It's funny, almost all commentators describe Novak as clinical and I do get the sense when he plays that it is a day at the office. Not like when I watch Alcaraz, or others, where there is much more of a normal response to brilliant shot making, — or even in the style of play!
Interesting historical stuff on Warwinka, and Nadal/Federer being more disruptive. Maybe that's part of what makes their playing style more interesting to watch (IMO).
Onwards march for Novak, but also onwards march for Alcaraz…
Again great point on the 2014-2016 Novak as opposed to today's Novak, the Novak from the past was more of a baseline grinder which was Stan's bread and butter at that point, but Novak's adaptation as time went on, bringing in the new weapons such as inch perfect spot serving, slicing, dropshots kind of makes Stan second guess. Because of this variety, that's why I think Novak has the edge on grass and why he has been so dominant in the previous decade, not counting 2016 and 2017.
First set 38% 1 serve 1 winner from game, second 35% first serve 0 winner, he was so bad
Next match with Hubi will be interesting, all sets in tie-break maybe who knows.
Hubi has a chance to win, it depends how well he will serve
Amazing analysis on Stan match up with Novak 👏👏👏🙏❤️
I know this is controversial to say, but I believe that I am better than Novak. I mean, yeah ok, he might beat me RIGHT NOW but that's because I don't practice and he like practices like 24/7 (but I still might be able to beat him because of my immense natural talent). But if I actually tried, I am certain I would win.
John Mcenroe said that Novak is a complete player, except his overhead shot is not that good, but Novak finished the match vs Wawrinka with an overhead shot! 😂
The only way Novak losses to Stan is when Novak is too defensive….It happened couple of times and it always ended bed for Novak.
Novak & Stan was a throwback delight! That 3rd set was very competitive until Mr. Clutch got to the tiebreaker. Stan had his chances. Love your take Gill on the contact points & varying tempo, speed, pace & shot-types keeping Stan from getting into his COMFORT ZONE on power – Djoker the Disruptor! Great insights Gill! The Gumby-Spiderman in Nole's game is sublime especially @ Wimby. Think Hubie might get a set, but Novak in 3 or 4 against Hurkacz. Wimby-22 it was Nick K. Wimby-23 it's Carlitos for the challenge. Novak also closing rallies with many fewer shots these days. Nole's arsenal and toolbag have expanded & improved so Nole 2023 might very well have beaten prime Stan @ some of those losses to Wawrinka. Props to Andy & Stan for being such later-years up-leveled players and making this Wimby-23 a very special one for these reasons alone! Thanx Gill. Best, Milan
Stan is washed up past his prime . His best performance in Wimbledon was against Roger in 2014 wimbledon where he generated insane pace but still roger won in 4 sets . Stan was far behind the 2014 wimbledon level . I will still back this version of novak to beat stan but match would be much more competitive .
hi Gill, I fully agree with you regarding Novak vs Wawrinka matches of 2014-2016 in slams where Novak was giving rhythm to Stan and didn't disrupt his game also Goran as coach has added new dimension or Novak himself evolved into a much better player. Today's version of Novak would have easily defeated best version of Stan 2014-16 . Novak is more complete player than he ever was.
❤❤❤
To have been able to defeat Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open + 2 major finals during his prime years, it tells you what a beast Stanislas Wawrkinka was … the man was so tough, mentally and technically …
He also beat Nadal at a major final and Federer at a Masters 1000 final, was a Davis Cup Champion, Olympic medalist and ascended as high as #3 in the world during the Federer – Nadal – Djokovic era … this all tells what a great player he was. He will surely be inducted one day into the tennis hall of fame. Wawrinka was a credit to the game.
Stan is a player where if you allow him time to wind up, he will blow you out of the court with his raw power, and that was what he did in those 3 matches in the past against Novak. That is also why Stan doesn't do well on grass where the game's much faster. Roger for example, with his aggressive tennis and hitting on the rise, never allowed Stan that luxury of time and always rushed Stan. It is no coincidence that Roger's three losses against Stan (Roger-Stan's head-to-head is 23-3!) all came on clay where the bounce is much slower and Stan can wind up and unleash all that power.
I agree with Novak not being proactive vs Stan in their previous matches which cost him multiple losses, but I don't agree with the notion that Roger and Rafa were beating Stan during that 2014-2016 periods due to their 'variety'. He beat Rafa at 14 AO final, first two sets were comfortable. They never faced in any other slam in that period because Rafa wasn't making deep in other slams. He was 1-2 vs Roger including a loss at Wimbledon and faster HC USO. No meeting at AO and only one at RG which Stan won. Novak and Stan were facing each other more frequently.
