[Habs Links] With Newhook at $2.9m, the Canadiens are projected to have just over $15m of cap room next summer and just Montembeault/Xhekaj/Barron to sign. That’s with Price’s contract still on the books. The Habs will have ultimate cap flexibility, will be an exciting summer.

  1. Next year is a big year for UFAs also, I bet we try to make a splash

I’d be shocked if we don’t try for a big name FA forward next summer.

Time to get Matthews to wear the habs uniform again.

I don’t suppose we think this is the last we’ve heard of Kent Hughes this summer, is it?

If by making a splash you mean being used by agents to secure a bigger salary elsewhere, I would agree we are likely to make a splash…

If there’s a big move involving a large cap hit, it’ll most likely come via trade. I’ve shut the door completely on any top6, top4 FA’s ever signing here.

So, a total of roughly $25M will be available if we put Price on LTIR ? $25M is huge !!! And we can even have more if we trade away Armia, Dvorak, Savard or Allen.

Well this is how we got a sick deal like Monahan where they gave us a first round to take him… Look at the pacioretty giveaway from golden knights last year… When teams get cap fucked, this is where teams like montreal can fleece them.

Btw, look at the cap situation in Toronto right now… They are over the cap and need to still sign samsonov… Let’s get another Monahan with a complimentary first rounder lol!

Would Zegras be a good fit whit the team?

Surprise twist: Montembeault wins the Vezina this year, gets 35 wins, we sign him to a $8M/season deal for 8 years and eat up our cap room

  11. And that’s what this pain has been all about. We won’t have lost all the bad contracts but we will be in an excellent position to take the next step. We will have cap space and we will have a surplus of valuable assets (especially LD) to use as trade chips.

  12. But Carey might still come back…. 😢😢

How much do we think Monty signs for? 2-6 million? I genuinely have no idea how much he’s worth after these past couple of years.

great we have the cap room to land Seth Jones!

No one big will sign here. At best we can use that cap to trade for bad contracts and get picks alongside.

This has basically been the whole point of the rebuild. Nothing drastic is possible until the deadweight contracts are gone. They have negative value, and we’re don’t have the assets to be good enough to win so we’ve traded anything with value and let that bad contracts simply run their course, while drafting high. Others like Gallagher will eventually be LTIRd and others like Anderson are decent enough to stick around.
