  1. people only watching stats line do not see newhook was a bit burried in Col. He'll have more ic time and more responsability in Mtl so he may almost double his production just the first year. then he may even gets to near a ppg if he really lives up to excpectation. and the guy is only 22!!!

  2. I'm going to say that he doesn't suck, a slight overpay, and a good move, not an incredibly smart move. He's a great 3rd liner and the contract is good, but if he's good enough for your 2nd line your team is in trouble, so trading a 1st, 2nd, + is a bit steep, plus I don't see how this fits their timeline.

  3. I really like him in Colorado but we didn't have time for him to pan out

  4. Avs fan here, Newhook is a gem give him a year or two especially with the cap go up, this is a steal. Avs in win now mode and didn’t have the time to develop him.

  5. Awesome contract for the habs this trade definitely going to end up as a steal for the habs he played good with the avs but put him with a cole kirby suzuki this young team lots of potential to grow going to be exciting season can't wait 👍🏻

  6. I've posed this question to has fans. Would you have traded the 31st and 37th pick for the 16th pick.
    Most fans say absolutely.

  7. Honestly the way he plays he looks more skillful than dach! If he can find a way to be consistent i can even see him puting up 60-70 pts! Might be a stretch but he has a ton of skill! This could be an amazing contract

  8. “ ohhhh it’s Johnny Hawkey”. People say “ ohhh all he does is complain. He doesn’t like any moves that are made. I disagree, best value YouTube insider. I know you’ll say “ ohhhh he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Ohhh he’s never right” I’m gunna make you eat your words. Peace out

  9. Happy to get him a chance. 20 goals and 45 points isn't really all that good. Nice young player to add and only 22. I think Hughes may have some buyers remorse from the 2019 draft when he took Kaapo Kakko . He has gotten Kirby dach 3rd in 2019 and Newhook 16th from the same draft. Maybe he just did a lot of work on this draft with the rangers?

  10. I think we'll have to see how this trade pans out in the coming years. But as an Avs fan, I think it will be mutually beneficial with newkook having promise and being allowed to breathe and the picks we traded, turning into a promising prospect and Ross Colten for great third line depth

  11. Newhook is not better than Monaghan. And he is not a top 6. He might well be a good 3rd liner. Most commentators are overrating him. He doesn’t suck, but they do.

  12. Whoever says "He only scored 14 goals" couldn't even score ONE over a full season 😂

  13. I really liked newhook on the Avs. He just didn’t find his stride. He struggled being consistent last year. The 2C role was just too much, but he showed promise and with the right team he will thrive.

  14. Imagine for next 3 year dach and newhook for 6.25 aav total. Last year, almost all bad contract will be off the Habs outside Gallagher and price

  15. I have watched newhook play his entire career in Colorado and this dude has amazing potential I think it was a great move by the habs. Side note I am an avs and habs fan so I love seeing the avs/habs trades

  16. Bro, they gave up basically two 1st round picks for a 3rd line player, that is a terrible trade

  17. Many Fans rightly believed that one of the two picks was enough, The potential isn't in question but he hasn't played up to his talent over the past two seasons. In ideal circumstances with Martin St-Louis, a young team where he will have all the confidence, he could find his marks and flourish.
The salary is fair, good luck to Newhook and to THE BEST HOCKEY TEAM IN THE WORLD!

  18. If Newhook with his small frame stay a 15-20 goal scorer like he is since 2 years, it will be a very bad move by Gorton.

  19. Still overpaid, 3rd line center for most team. Didnt see him enough play tough. does he win faceoff?
    Colorado gave a 16th overall pick for a 31th and 37th pick
Theres a reason and that reason is they saw more potential in thoses 2 picks than Newhook for their future like we should have.

I did complaint about his goals but i didnt say he suck. I said at 22 yo 15 goals per season, with Colorado, at center, thats a third line center for most teams.People told me hes playing minimum minutes….so what, he wont play much in another well builded good team .Hell play much in MTL for sure, but we are bad
But i guess if every gm was thinking the same thing…they would be no trade.
For me its overpaid, usually kind of player traded for a first round outside MTL.
S.Jones-Toffoli-Reinhart-Eichel those are the biggest exemple,i know theres a lot of bad trades too but generally for a 1rst round…
    Now in MTL
    Dvorak – Newhook
Basically we traded Chiarot for Newhook and I prefered Chiarot(had more value at the time pobably still have).

  20. used to play york simcoe with newhook, hes got it in him just wait.

  21. Every year a third liner from a cup team gets signed to a big deal and they think it's gonna be great then the third liner get put in the top six and everyone is disappointed

  22. I can't remember how many times a guy who had 1 good playoff season went on to do nothing else in their career… $2.9M isn't cheap, but it won't break the bank either. Still say that Montreal got fleeced – but that will depend on how the picks turn out.

  23. Newhook was poorly handled by Bednar. Was promised a chance at 2C, but it didn't happen. Newhook had to constantly play with new linemates mostly on the 3rd line. The best is yet to come. Montreal made a wise move acquiring a high ceiling talent while the price was still low. I see him as a 50 to 70 point guy..

  24. Gotta love the internet coaches who have nothing better to do than critique a professional coaches choices ! How about you all shut up and let the players do their thing before attacking the coach . OH wait it's 2023 , we don't do that anymore do we ?

  25. I believe he may see some PK time as well. He really is a Swiss Army knife kind of player. Wherever, whatever you need Coach, I’m good to go!! This player will become a key foundational piece for this team.

  26. He played 2nd line Center? No shit he didn’t score a ton! He’s playing against bigger, stronger, heavier guys who are the better talent for their teams.

  27. I am a diehard avs fan who watched every game the last 2 seasons and I can say confidently, not because "oooh 14 goals", but because of watching his play night in and night out, 2.9×4 newhook is an overpay. And I really liked newhook's game and thought he did fit with the Avs – his skating is insane, he has great puck handling, and overall plays responsibly enough to not be a liability. But he has no finish at all. He is simply not a goal scorer. I cannot count how many times I watched him pull of a sick breakaway, juke defenders, and have the cleanest shot at the net possible, and he just cannot score. During the stanley cup year he was great, but he rarely scored off of his own plays. Aube-Kubel would finish most of newhook's plays for him. I think Montreal will be a better place for him where he can finish developing, but I also don't think anyone is going to be looking at his play and thinking it was worth every bit of ~3 mil a year. At best you may find his performance adequate for the contract, more likely he will be a mild disappointment that garners interest but never really lives up to what is wanted of him.

  28. Now we need to get Yamamoto to play with Suzuki and get Martinook to play with Newhook and I’ll be hooked 😳

  29. Great skater, low hockey IQ. Have him watch a boat load of tapes and his skills might make him a 2nd line center.

  30. Good trade both ways and Newhook is really promising guy with ceiling yet to be seen, plus I think he's a great fit to the Habs roster this far as well.

  31. Newhook is a good young player but there’s two things that never happened with him in colorado.

    1) he wasn’t given a big chance. Avs tried to put him far up in the lineup but they were maybe too quick to move him back down.
    2) he didn’t make the best of those opportunities when he was given them.

So with that being said I think it’s frustrating from both sides. Avs are a win-now team and he was given an opportunity to be a 2C and didn’t show anything in the given time, so the avs needed to move on in order to make SURE the 2C position was filled. And for newhook, it’s a bit rough that he had the usual softmore slump a lot of players go through and it was poorly matched up with the avs in search for a 2C. So he didn’t produce when given the opportunity.

This trade honestly makes sense for everyone involved. Avs got assets and with some of those picks really solidified their center depth with Ross Colton. The Montreal Canadiens got a young and talented center that has a good amount of upside. And Alex Newhook got to go to a team where he’s pretty much guaranteed a top 6 role and is also given a much longer runway.

I’m very happy for newhook, his time with the avs was quick but memorable and I’m happy he’s getting the opportunity he deserves. I hope he does well for the canadiens because he has some brilliant flashes at moments for the avs.

  32. mostly bad things that come out of MTL is the mainstream media like RDS that try to push narative like the young Logan Mailloux that hes evil and should not get a chace lol idiots those RDS clowns
