Noel Acciari and Lars Eller reveal the plans for the Penguins bottom six!

The dog days of summer have arrived but that doesn’t mean there are not things to discuss! For this episode, Hunter is joined by Tyler Weeks of Around The 412 to discuss what Lars Eller and Noel Acciari had to say to the media on Tuesday. They look at how the plans for the bottom six were revealed and whether or not it’s a good plan with a core that’s a bit older. They look at the potential of a Nieto-Eller-Acciari line and whether that will be the third line heading into the year. After that, they look at what the backup plan is if the Penguins do not land Erik Karlsson. Could the team have interest in Matt Dumba? Will Jeff Petry be on the team at that point? Finally, they end the show with what the top games were this past season even though they missed the playoffs.

  1. I think that having the bottom 6 be a defensive shutdown role is the best for the team. We all saw last year how bad those lines can cripple you when ever they can’t stop teams from scoring against. I know they used up all their space on the players that they got, but I’m hoping they dump the bad contracts to get get EK or another bigger player from trade.

  2. I think the team is definitely looking better and as far as depth scoring I think you could get it with this lineup baring granlund gets delt…

    Guentzle-Crosby-Rakell
    Smith -Malkin-Nylander
    Johnsson/DOC-Eller-Rust
    Nieto-Accari- Carter

  3. I actually think Nylander, Hinostroza, Zohorna and DOC are capable of providing league average scoring in the bottom 6. Maybe Johnsson too, depending on health. I'm just not convinced Sullivan is gonna use who he has at his disposal properly.
    He certainly didn't last year.
Also, it's important to factor in that Sullivan leans on the bottom 6 for D-zone usage harder than almost any other coach. So that affects their ability to contribute offensively. You gotta account for a sort of tax with Pittsburgh bottom six'ers when projecting their numbers. Wouldn't be surprised if Eller gets 75-80% D-zone starts at even-strength.

  4. Karlsson would be so cool on the penguins I think him and burns didn’t work as well on the sharks as they thought they would but letang isn’t a 20 plus goal d man anyway he can play the defensive role and also make our 2nd PP unit have allot more skill

  5. Def don't like relying on the top lines, they didn't win cups with no bottom 6 that can't chip in. U have to have scoring on that bottom 6, look at the knights they had bottom 6 scoring. I don't like this look too much

  6. I'm missing something. Why do we think the Sharks have any incentive to rush this trade? Karlsson has like 4 years left on his contract, and while the Sharks don't necessarily want that cap hit, they're not over cap either. This isn't a Timo situation where Karlsson could become a free agent he's locked in unless they choose to move him, so why would they give him up for nothing aka trade for Granlund? Why not hold out for something better?

  7. My thoughts are it’s somewhat problematic to have to offensive lines that are slightly softer (not saying they’re super soft, but they don’t play very physical) then we have two more physical lines that can’t score. I wish we’d mix up the lineup more to have 4 more consistent lines with some jam and some finish.

  8. Also I notice the pens rely way way way too much on that high floating dump out of their own zone…. They do not try to skate the puck out. This is very common once they get the lead and seems like it’s their game plan it’s very weird. That play should be a last resort when you’re totally gassed.

  9. Haha one more comment…. Thank u for addressing that crazy trade rumor! I’m with u! The pens; while getting. Great player… karlsson, are doing the sharks a huge favor. They’re a bad team, and they signed the bad contract. They’re a bad team stuck on a 4 year 11.5 Million dollar deal. The pens should not be moving prime assets. It’s almost a weird salary dump… If the pens send out pettry and granlund, and the sharks pay 3 million of EK salary. Then you are still buying 2 years and 8.5 Million dollars for a 35 year old (he will be 35 after the first two years of even money exchange). That means we shouldn’t pay San Jose to do so, they should almost pay us honestly to an extent. I think the deal would have to be pettry and granlund going out, then maybe…. Maybe…. One first round pick, but I’d honestly think maybe something else like a Ty smith and a second and a fifth or something should do it, pens get another kick at the can while a big risk, San Jose saves 16 million over two years and is helped to tank. It makes sense. One more note, I’m with you I don’t buy the Carolina interest. I don’t see why they would make this deal at all, they have a solid scoring defensive core. Burns and karlsson didn’t work out, why would they take that risk.

  10. Best solution: Acquire an accomplished wing to replace Rust on the top six. Pair Johnsson, Rust and O'Connor on a balanced third line. (O'Connor moves to center, his best position.) Play Eller between Hinostroza/Nieto and Acciari on a high-energy, more d-minded fourth line.
