Analyzing the Montreal Canadiens goaltending prospects after the 2023 NHL Draft

Inside today’s Locked on Canadiens

Scott and Laura welcome a special guest to the show today, Gregory Balloch from Elite Prospects!

With Greg joining the show the hosts finally can get answers on all their goalie questions related to the Montreal Canadiens!

Greg helps to break down what makes Jacob Fowler tick in net, and why fans should be thrilled that the Habs found him in the 2023 NHL Draft. What can we expect from Fowler, where does he thrive and where does he need to improve? Balloch has the answers for us all.

Then, as the Canadiens stockpiled goalies in the NHL Draft, fans had plenty of questions about some of the names picked. Greg has plenty of intel on Quentin Miller, a Quebec-born netminder playing in the QMJHL right now. Is there a steal to be had in Miller, or is he still a longshot to be a pro for the Habs?

To wrap up the show, the hosts discuss the first pro season ahead of Jakub Dobes with the Laval Rocket. Will Dobes shine with his aggressive style, or does he need to further refine it to find success? Also, with Greg having history with the BCHL, he gives Scott and Laura an exclusive scouting report on Alex Newhook!

  1. I know Jakub Dobes is an older prospect, but he is the most ready prospect to make in the NHL within a year or 2

  2. I think the Habs best pick in the draft was Fowler. Dave Peterson Goaltender of the Year Award suggests he was the best goalie in the USHL, although winning the championship may have tipped the scales in his favor. Said areas to improve is skating, conditioning and quickness, quickness is a given for any goalie moving forward at his level, skating and conditioning is addressable with the work. One area for Augustine was rebound control. Fowler, regarded for hockey IQ/reading plays, wide stance yet shutting the 5-hole effectively, lateral movement/quickness, calm to his game, tight on posts, staying square to puck…he has family ties to Quebec, seemed happy to be selected by Montreal (said something along the lines regarding family ties 'it's kind of cool how everything sort of comes full circle/ to go to the Habs I don't think I could of wrote the script any better'), plus with pressure comes pride and I want to be part of that, understands the work he has to do to reach new levels and get quicker, "overcook" himself in college, embraced hockey at a young age and seems well spoken with an intelligent good attitude, looks forward to the challenge and understands there will be red lights. I have a good feeling about this kid but I'm not an analyst nor can I predict the future. I go by scouting/reports and watching clips I can find.
As for Alex Newhook, with more ice time there should be higher numbers proportionally, room for some growth but I don't expect anything incredible. Speed, puck control, can play various situations. Maybe they gave up too much to get him but at the same time the prospect pool is quite full, just like the roster at this point/moment. Kind of expendable income.
The goalie situation and defenseman depth is fine for now, IMO the area needing future focus is forwards in scoring and defensive support. Eventually, depth on promising defense prospects and such should accommodate trades and there's always hidden gems in drafts. I don't expect top 10 picks in the near future. Again, I'm not an expert but I sure am long winded LOL. Been a fan since the '70's. Lafleur, Shutt, Mondou, Lambert, Lemaire, Tremblay-scoring depth, defensive forward support, then great defenseman and well, Ken Dryden. The game has changed, that was the era of dynasties but it is still hockey, put the puck in the net as much as possible and shut down the opposing team's offense effectively as a team unit.
