Former New York Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss announced his retirement from the NHL on Wednesday. We discuss Greiss’ legacy from his five seasons with the Isles. He had some real clutch moments in the playoffs and won a Jennings Trophy with the team, the first time the Isles won it since Billy Smith and Roland Melanson did in 1983.
We also discuss Josh Bailey’s potential path back to the Isles, but not as a player. Would Bailey be willing to be an assistant coach either with the big club or the Bridgeport Islanders to help the power play?
Plus we further discuss the coaching vacancy in Bridgeport and tell who is likely to get the job and why.
All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

Take the hint LOU. Or are you waiting until '25 to see how much more damage you can do to isles or waiting until your old ass forwards are rotting? The man with the plan…
Greiss was very solid in net.
I was at the game when he came back and played against us with Detroit. We chanted "Greisser" when he was introduced and he waved to the crowd, you could tell he appreciated it. Unfortunately he got pulled in that game for an injury, but it was still awesome.
Whenever I think of Greiss, it's his poke checks, big smile and easy-going professionalism that stand out. The media was intent on getting Thomas to talk about how difficult it is for him to sit long periods, then have to perform at a high level. He would give that sideways look and almost chuckle while he laid out how simple it is for him. Some athletes have trouble adapting to retirement, but I have a feeling Thomas is smiling and having fun while he just rolls with it.
Interesting thought on Bailey as PP coach. I would be 100% for giving Bailey a shot at it. He was usually solid in his anticipation and positioning, something our PP lacks to a frightening degree. I'm not sure he has the confidence to TELL players what they need to do, but I would be fine with giving him a shot. What do we have to lose.
Their power play needs to be completely redone. Don't move the puck or their feet and the passes are slow. And they don't shoot the puck. Their power play probably cost them 15 to 20 points last season. It has to get better for this team to improve.
Good afternoon Gil and everyone. Thomas Greiss calling it quits. He was a fun goaltender to watch. I have great respect for him and I hope his future endeavors are successful and we wish him the best. Bridgepoint's new leader is going to be very important to the NHL organization. Hopefully looking to develop some future talent. I'm glad to hear that Josh Bailey's name is going to be around a bit longer, even though it's not going to be on the ice. Another awesome episode sir. Thank you for giving it to us straight and keeping hockey on our mind during the off season. I'll be listening to the show, but maybe not commenting until next Tuesday or Wednesday. Talk to everyone again soon. If I don't get a chance to say this tomorrow, everyone have a great weekend! Until the next episode.. Let's Go Islanders!!
Hi Gil! I’ll always remember Greiss for coming thru in game 7 against the Flyers a few years ago. He got the nod and came thru! He could have caved—-he stood his ground and played well—shutout I believe. He was a solid NHL netminder! Good luck Thomas!! Funny—I write as I listen to your show and you just mentioned the shutout—you’re spot on about Thomas! Gil, am I the only one bummed out about this upcoming season? Knowing we’re old and slow, knowing we’re running it back! Knowing the signings except for Sorokin are blah! Knowing you’re not gonna win it and really don’t have a chance? Bailey? Look, the man has a family, has paid his dues, deserves a chance to coach. He loves the Island and I’d give him a chance. It’s no different than Hickey—-look how good he’s become! He would be a sentimental choice and how much worse can the power play be. I’ll tell ya what—-I know what I would cut out! That garbage back pass to Barzie in his own zone and that crap sprint!! If fumbled it’s a high scoring chance and we just don’t have the speed to get back with momentum going the other way. That play drives me batty. Gil when a power play is this awful I’d go back to basics. I would put Bo on one side, Lee on the other, try and screen and simply shoot. Pass, pass, pass, pass! Kidding? Shoot, shoot, shoot!! Not hard to figure out. If Lee and Bo get their goals this way—why not set up plays for them in front? If not, Bo used as a bumper—-Lee in front or vice versa. Those two looks and a shoot mentality is how I’d go about it. Take care Gil—excellent as always!
