Do the New York Islanders Have Room in Their Lineup for Some Familiar Faces?

Today we examine the New York Islanders organizational depth chart and you may be surprised that there may not be room for some of the players who played roles last season? Who takes over on the third line if Zach Parise retires? Does Oliver Wahlstrom move to left wing? Or Hudson Fasching?

Is there room for Simon Holmstrom in the lineup or should he start the season in Bridgeport? What about Julien Gauthier or Cal Clutterbuck?

Plus, the Bridgeport Islanders made it official and hired a new head coach, we discuss that and a lot more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. parise retire. holmstrom ban to ahl for good. gauthier is a depth guy call-up. clutterbuck ltir. move to yotes who love ltir space now that galch deal is waived. lw/rw don't matter with wahlstorm. why take a guy that can't produce on rw and put him on lw? as usual isles have the big hole on 13/14 line. and the never ending glaring sore spot-two top six upgrades. maybe dufour will get it in camp. or maybe maggio surprises in camp. that's all you can ask for.
    14-13-?

i just don't fkn know. isles forward group sucks. all forwards are interchangeable and the same.

  2. Was hoping the Isles will rid some older bloated contracts and bring in some younger players….This line-up is several seasons stale……Not every addition needs to be a 5-7 million dollar player or proven, what ever happened to Coaching up some talent that was scouted and sniped from other teams farm systems or was that just the NFL ?……not sure of the rules…….Go Islanders!!!

  3. I would put Engvall with Horvat and Barzal. Lee-Nelson-Palmieri was a really good line mid-season. Plus Lee and Horvat play the exact same way, so having them on the same line doesn't make sense.

  4. one word on wahlstrom-konecny. konecny 30 g 31 a 60 gp to isles rumours out there. $5.5 x 2 left before ufa. wahlstrom rfa. flyers rebuilding as hart, frost, tippett, york need raises next two seasons. flyers $1,272 projected cap space. Isles $888.333 projected cap space. Wahlstrom first? (since lou will trade '24 first away) for konecny. flyers would have to take some $$$'s back or eat part of konecny deal. ltir clutterbuck. konecny 26, can play both wings. Perhaps wing with 13, 14? Too bad isles can't poison pill zegras to fill out top six. Isles need to find a competent wing for 13,14 to help the $8 mill + investment in 13, 14. And wahlstrom isn't it. JUST DO NOT TRADE '25 FIRST AWAY LOU. You will regret it.

  5. Wahlstrom,Bo,barzy
    Engvall,Nelson,palmieri
    Lee,jgp,iskhakov
    Durandeau,Casey,fasching
    Pelech,Dobson
    Romanov,pulock
    Bolduc,mayfield
    Ex:Johnston,gauthier,aho

  6. Who said we need a third goalie? We have the dynamic duo ready go. We should leave our goalie department alone. It's already set.

  7. I think Gauthier will be tried out with Barzal and Horvat first, then with Casey and Facshing…then…with Lee and ( insert Centerman here)

  8. Tristan Lennox…Aiden Fulp….Travis Mitchell…they can always "dumpster dive" for an AHL/ Backup…also …don't sleep on Henrik Tikanen(dp)

  9. The Isles lack of depth in the net is scary. There will be injuries at times, and seeing one of their 3 goalie 'prospects' sitting on the bench ready to come in will elicit some heavy praying there isn't another injury at goal. All 3 are marginal AHL netminder, at best. Appleby played 3 games for the Devils back in 2018, and his numbers were better than Sorokins. Since then, his AHL save % is .880, and he's the best of the bunch.

We have some big forwards on the depth chart. Koivula, Wahlstrom and Gauthier. All well over 200 lbs. Gauthier is 227. Wally WAS 211 when he got injured. He made a statement while he was still rehabbing that physicality is his game, and he's working on putting more muscle on his frame. If the is one sure bet next season, it's Clutterbuck missing a ton of games. Either of these 2 would fit the bill. They could also play on their off side and fill in for Martin. I think we'll see the end of the 'identity' line before January. Why not? They are getting less effective, and Lane is trying to shed the hard working, low scoring identity Trotz instilled.

If things start clicking for these 3, it would be happy news for Isle fans. Lets pray together….

  10. Lane needs to get Barzals head right. He's our sniper, and a lot more. He's got a hell of a shot, and he hits the holes. He also has incredible moves when he goes to the net. If he every decides to limit his figure skating and starts looking for a lane to the net instead of passing, he'll be a steady 90 pointer year after year. It's so frustrating to know we already have the guy we keep trying to acquire.
