Oilers Should Remain a Contender Despite Question Marks

Hello once again. The Oilers were expected to go further than they did in this year’s playoffs, so now the pressure is really on to get there.

  1. No question Nurse is overpaid. But by how much Shannon? I think he’s a 4 Million dollar defencemen? 5 tops?

  2. As a Calgary fan, i think it is oilers time next season they learned and matured only piece they are missing is a Gudas or Mayfield type of a player in defence 🤔

  3. I like the idea of having McDavid, Drai, Nuge, and Mcleod down the middle. I think our defense can improve immensely with that set up

  4. If I were the GM of the Oilers I would be giving a lot of thought to somehow making a trade for Hellebuyck. With him in net this team would be a true contender. Maybe trade Campbell and some picks or whatever needs to be done.

  5. Edmonton Oilers = Cup Contender? Yeah sorry, not with that Darnell Nurse contract, not to mention Jack Campbell should be bought out next off-season if he doesn't bounce back

  6. I mean, will they make the playoffs? sure, are they a real contender though? I kinda doubt it, the D core is kinda bad and the goalies are kinda iffy. Last year showed us probably the best you're gonna get out of McD and Dri, they were unreal, but are they going to be able to repeat? gonna get any scoring help at all? How are they gonna get past the knights or the avs or any of the monsters from the East unless a weak team flukes its way to the finals again, cough cough panthers.

  7. This team's fatal flaw is defending. Campbell was not good, sure. But a lot of his struggles were to blame on poor defending. Whether it's personnel coaching or both it has to be emphasized this offseason. Of course they will resign Bouch and this will be the unit up until the deadline, but they have to switch to zone d coverage as they could not execute man on man to save their life. You can't ask Skinner and Campbell to make ridiculous rebound saves every night and then blame them for those breakdowns.

  8. They need to score 5 or more goals a game to win, they are so bad defensively. Most nights they can get away with it, but not in the playoffs

  9. Last season/playoffs set up perfectly for EDM if they could have beaten VGK . I have been vocal about my lack of belief that EDM w/ McDavid & Co. would win a SC b/c I thought COL was going to be a sort of mini dynasty SC contender for several years running. W/ Landesgog injured & Nichuskin troubles & losing others, I'm not sold on COL as much anymore. Also thought LAK would be tough for EDM to beat but not so really. DAL MIN & SEA wouldn't beat EDM in the pl/o IMO. EDM could still get out of the WC & if they did, I wouldn't bet against them in the final. Not sure if they ever will but if they don't do it soon, McDavid & or Draisaitl will probably have to leave

  10. It's crazy that with Draisaitl making only 8.5 and they still can't win a cup.. Nurse contract will haunt them for 100 years if they don't win a cup

  11. Oilers/Kings jersey was a franchise interesting choice back in the day. I will admit I wanted one.
I fully agree on Jack. I too want him to have success. He does seem like a really nice guy. He likes cats. Gotta like people who like cats. 👍

  12. The Oil seem to face the same issue every year . The defensive part of the game is sub par and the goaltending is questionable . With the offensive game being second to none , the lack of quality defence is hurting them trying to move forward in the playoffs .

  13. Noah Philp was given a qualifying offer but he is retiring. If im not mistaken.

  14. Oilers (much like the Leafs ironically) need better defensive defenceman, Ekholm is a good start, but I would still argue more than half of their defensive core is a defensive liability at times (Ceci, Desharnais, Bouchard, Nurse). Just like the Leafs they aren’t “bad” but they aren’t well rounded enough to win a cup without some more changes/additions (unless someone can step up and take that next step). The Oilers show some pushback and they don’t shy away in big moments, which puts them a step above Toronto, but I still don’t think being better than Toronto is the standard for a cup winning team. I think Edmonton is a new GM away from a Stanley Cup, just my take.

  15. People have to remember that skinner was a rookie. Hell he almost won the Calder. Give him another season or two to develop fully into a real starter and he could easily be a cup contending goaltender

  16. Campbell is a nice guy and probably the best paid backup goalie in the NHL right now, along with Matt Murray. Skinner is a good developing goalie but it's a big ask for him to take this team on his back. The OIlers have the same desperate needs they have every season: get better goaltending, upgrade the defence, and get some depth scoring.

  17. They will be fine, they thoroughly outplayed Vegas everywhere but in net. If they can get some goaltending they are scary

  18. does it matter how many points you get in the regular season if that doesnt translate to the playoffs?

  19. Nurses contract is probably the worst in the league and completely unmoveable. He was a pylon in the playoffs and he makes way too many mistakes in his own end. And hes not good enough offensively where you can justify the mistakes.

  20. Great team for the regular season but playoffs? I don’t think so . Always Missing something. leafs were the same , till this year . They got tough. For me they will not be a great regular season team but watch them in the playoffs .

  21. While it's never fun to lose in the playoffs, overall I had an incredible time watching all 94 games this year for the first time. I'm really proud of this team and am excited for what comes next.

  22. Bottom 6 needs more minutes, Soup needs to be average, they'll win the cup.

  23. Oilers will always remain a contender just as long as they have both McJesus and Drai, but every coach couldn't resist outscoring their problems away instead of addressing their defence…

  24. My Oilers hottake is that Stu is a $2.6m starter and Soup is a $5m backup. Whether this set up is good is a different matter, but as a backup Soup has been incredible and provides great relief for Stu as he develops into the starter we know he can be

  25. As an oilers fan, I'm optimistic. Once again, they look to be contenders for the cup. A deadline move or two, and they could even be stronger. This could be the year.

  26. Need the coach not to be stupid and stick with a goalie that was pulled many times in a single series.
Campbell should of been in net for the 6th game vs Vegas.

  27. Woodcroft was outcoached in the VGK series. He's a smart guy though and I think he'll learn from it and come back stronger

  28. Philp has retired from hockey and will not be playing this year, despite still technically being under contract. And Malone will not get playing time in the NHL over Pederson, not at Brad's age.

  29. getting rid of Kostin and Bjustad may hurt them. They did well in the Playoffs. Just adding Brown is a gamble seeing that he is injury probe. Did they do much to make themselves better? Not much. Hopefully Holland has a back-up plan.

  30. You are better at analysis in the sport than the majority of “professionals” and you explain it in layman’s terms so everyone understands what you’re talking keep up the work you’re amazing!

  31. I sincerely believe that with nurse Ceci and Campbell out I think this team could be a dynasty. Just gotta replace them with the right players.

  32. I honestly dont have as much worry about Campbell as many people do. He saved Edmonton's season more or less in the comeback win in game 4 against Los Angeles.

The contract is what it is and a buyout is not an option in the first year of an expensive 5 year deal. Not starting him in the Vegas series at least once was simply a poor coaching decision in my opinion as Skinner ran out of gas.

The key in my eyes is the youth stepping up and filling the holes left in the bottom six and bottom half of the D-core. If Edmonton can get good goaltending from both net minders spliting games nearly in half and get significant contributions from their cheap ELC's, they will be a contender and those question marks will disappear.
