Five Burning Questions Heading Into Next Season for the Colorado Avalanche

Now that most of the dust has settled after a furious free agency period, a draft and some trades, we can start to look forward to next season and ask five burning questions facing the Colorado Avalanche.

The questions we tackle are:
1- Will the new acquisitions make a big enough impact?
2- Did the Avalanche do enough to address their needs?
3- Should the Avs name a temporary captain for this season?
4- Could the Avalanche have three different players hit the 100 point mark? Could they get four!?
5- Will Alexander Gerogiev become thought of as a top-tier goalie after this season?

  1. Honestly, I think you guys and most fans way overestimate the importance of the letters sewn on to the front of jerseys. I guarantee you in that room Landy is the captain not because he has a C on his jersey, but because he absolutely is the leader of that team on and off the ice. Whenever you hear Sakic or C-Mac talk about adding players to the team the first thing they mention is character. They have built and now cultivate a winning atmosphere in that locker room that is not dependent one single bit on who wears what letter. The letters are important during the game in regards to who is officially allowed to communicate with the officials and things like that, but in the room it doesn't mean much. Just take a look at the Cup run and how much credit was given to Cogliano for getting the team together before game 6 and giving that speech. That guy is probably 6 or 7 down the depth chart when it comes to who would be a third A if necessary, but he's still a leader in the room. Now, I will grant you that the media does make a big deal about the C and emphasizes it more in who they interview and the weight they apply to who says what in a story. That responsibility is now spread through multiple players now instead of just one.

One final thing about this, the Avs and Avs fans have been incredibly spoiled the last 10 or so years by having one of the very best leaders in all of sports as our captain. Landy is just an absolute natural for the position in the way he deals with teammates ranging from MacK and Mikko and down to the waiver pickup or the 12th different guy called up from the Eagles during the year. He takes the time to get to know each of them and learn how they tick so that that the team and coaches can get the very best out of them. Just in terms of his leadership ability right now, I think the only ones in the league I might put at that level would be Crosby, Bergeron, and Stamkos.

Now, just to feed the question. If this does wind up to be the end of his career, the next captain will almost surely be Makar. I do think though that the best suited to fully take that job in the room might just be Byram.
