Perhaps part of the reason the defence was so bad is because Kovacevic was the only one to be close to playing a full season. and only three others, Harris, Edmundson and Savard, played more than 60.
It's unrealistic to assume that Canadiens will have 150 more injury man games than any other team. Healthier players means goalies workload is decreased. A whole year of Caufield, a young defense with another year under their belts, Slafkovski takes a step, they could make the playoffs if the breaks fall their way.
I’ll be optimistic and say they got a chance to be 8th if several conditions are met. Avoid injuries, breakout year for Slaf and Newhook. Emergence of one rookie defenseman. If Slaf and Newhook produce and Caufield isn’t injured, Habs can get an extra 40-50 goals this season along with a slightly better D, I can see them squeeze in at 8th.
There is almost no chance of the Canadiens making playoffs this year. Progression is not linear when it comes to the NHL, meaning there could be a few players who stagnate or take a small step back as opposed to last season. I dont see Monty playing as good as he did last season etc. I think overall they should be a better team, and hope to see continued development from all the young players. Lets not forget the majority of our team has not even come close to their prime, including Caufield, Dach, Slaf, and pretty much everyone on Defense. That being said, i see them finishing between 24-26th, but keeping the games entertaining, and close.

Less than zero chance

They had 68 points while having the most injuries. I think between 80-85 points is a reasonable goal. Trending upwards for sure.
There is a better chance we end last then make the playoffs!
No. And they are not expected to. It's purely a development year. Plus we NEED to draft IVAN DEMIDOV or someone like him.

if we stay healthy, i think theres a small chance

Not this year but next.

tough division
bring in player developer for defense?
would neutral zone puck possession help?
trade couple of forwards for goaltender, maybe Gibson?
They could injuries permitting fight for a wild card 🤔but we'll see GO HABS GO 💕
