The Athletic released their top 50 NHL prospects this morning. The Devils have the top two defensive prospects in Hughes and Nemec at 7 and 8 respectively and they are the 2nd and 3rd ranked prospects behind Logan Cooley.
I think its important to note too that the teams ahead of the Devils with prospects are all currently rebuilding, as are many of the “near by” teams behind them.
The Devils also have Holtz listed at 34, and Seasmus Casey getting an “honorable mention.” The Cup Contending window has opened, my friends.

Windows open and we have four guys 3 in the top 100. 1 just on the bubble, and two of the three are top 10
Holy shit that is bonkers.

Hot take: the Devils are good and are poised to stay good for a while.

My main takeaway from this is that Wheeler has moved Nemec ahead of Jiricek since his last rankings in February.

Had a bad feeling when NJ drafted Nemec, but have an excellent feeling about him now…
TBH, the youtube scouts, though they’re usually pretty good, were really bad at assessing this guy’s game. I saw him at the WC quite a bit, but my eyes were on Slafkovsky at the time. This year I was more focused on him at the WJC, and I saw hints of what he really was and can be for a hockey team. He’s not an OFD; he’s a true two way guy and a presence on the ice.

I remember hearing that The Athletic ranked the Devils prospect pool as second best in the NHL. I wonder where they’re ranked now after the Timo Meier trade (among other signings and trades) and the 2023 NHL Draft.
