RESPECT: IAN COLE CHANGES JERSEY NUMBER FROM 28 TO 82

A day after choosing to wear #28 for the Canucks, Ian Cole has changed his jersey number to #82 out of respect to the late Luc Bourdon and to honour his memory.

  1. Class gesture by Ian Cole. Although….I may suggest we may need to look at ourselves as mob mentality is a problem on social media. Professionalism by Ian, some people man….cyberbullying truly sucks.

  2. Classy move by Ian but another failure by the organization to inform him of the significance prior to tweeting it out. The Canucks need to do a better job of doing their homework beforehand instead of always doing damage control afterwards. Their shortcomings put Cole in an awkward and bad spot where fans went after him undeservingly when the organization could have avoided this mess to begin with after their initial selections were made to inform him prior to making it public. YAY to Ian but massive F to the Canucks pr department or whomever failed to tell him prior to them making it public

  3. Absolutely not Cole's fault at all. Just extremely disappointed in management for their failure to inform Cole about the significance of the number 28

  4. Cool!!👌 Good choice & gesture by Ian Cole!🫶 💪
(I think it's the duty of the club/ organization to prevent such situations beforehand… )

  5. Classy on Ian. People need to stop complaining about the organization not warning him before the tweet. They ended up telling him and relatively quick. Stop whining

  6. You cant say you respect him for doing it because you fans basically held hin hostage and made him do it. All the nasty comments but nowwwwwwww you all reapect him

  7. Very classy move on coles part… Excuse my ignorance lol but with all the new faces who is still around to even let cole know before making pick… kinda glad it went down this way just to show you what kinda player they signed even if I am not sold on the signing yet…. Good ole nux fans straight to the negative and didn’t even give the guy a chance to correct before blowing up the internet world lol… Go NuX Go….

  8. Classy move by Cole, but it’s incredible how clueless and heartless this management group is. Benning was a disaster from an on ice perspective and so far, that hasn’t changed. Now we’re dealing with some classless behaviour from management. They didn’t know what number Ian Cole was wearing and who Bourdon was and what number he wore? This whole organization continues to embarrass its players and its fans.

  9. Welcome to Vancouver Ian Cole. Where they'll always find something to complain about. I'll always support the Canucks but wow we have some emotional train wrecks in Vancouver.

  10. I can see how this might occur. I don’t blame the management but they could be more professional and assign someone this duty to avoid similar issues. I do appreciate management for bringing classy players to the team.

  11. Not required, and management screwed up not telling him (as others have said). Also there should be a limit to how long unofficially retired numbers should be kept out of circulation IMO, it's been 15 years

  12. How come 11 isn't out of circulation either since Maki passed away when he wore that?

  13. I think clubs should retire numbers such as these, if there will be backlash for a player picking a number of significance. Seems odd to just leave that number silently "retired". That way the original player is honored as they should be, and there won't be mistakes like this. Much respect to Ian Cole.

  14. I believe that if a number isn’t retired. It shouldn’t make the free agent have to research each and every number on each team.

  15. When I heard that he wore 29, and that it was Bourdon's number as a Canuck I kind of flinched. I wouldn't have blamed him, or held it against him. The number is not retired. But his move to switch to 82 is a classy.classy move. The Canucks organization needs to get their heads out of their butts and retire both numbers 11 and 28 officially now so there is no more confusion and controversy.

  16. Respect to Cole, he had no idea. Even as a lifelong Canucks fan I didn’t know that was Bourdon’s number. I honestly thought he wore a number under 10. If this is an issue though maybe Canucks should retire that number, since we’ve essentially shadow banned it as fans.

  17. Not a big deal if he wore the number. Luc played 36 NHL games and yes what happened is sad but its just a number. Over reaction by the fan base against Cole to get him to switch.

  18. My hot take, the number 28 isn't a retired number. It is available to use, he shouldn't have had to change his number. Yes I know who Luc was, it's a tragic story.

  19. Kudos to Cole for a true heartfelt gesture of respect. So different than when Messier asked to wear Wayne Maki's No. 11. Perfect example of opposites, a team player and a "me first" .

  20. Unless a number is fully retired, any number should be up for grabs. Just because a number means something to someone doesnt mean it cant mean something to someone else. Big L from the Canucks fan base on this one. After all these years of wearing 28 he needs to change it because someone died in a motor accident? Ridiculous.

  21. A very nice thing. Kuddos to you Ian Cole. A heart felt thanks. It is just a number, but this helps to preserve Lucs memory. Kindness.

  22. Good for Cole. It sure doesn't seem to be that many years ago. Time sure does fly by.

  23. This is so dumb Luc played 36 NHL games it was sad at the time but we really need to move past it. They didn't stop people from wearing 38 (Demitra) after he passed and he played a full season at least.

  24. It wasn’t his fault at all, but such a classy and respectful move to change to 82 especially when you have worn 28 since being a kid!!
    He has all my respect!!!

  25. I wanted Ian Cole to stand his ground and keep the number 28. It has been 15 years already. It's time to move on. To top it off, Bourdon only played 36 games. Taking 28 out of circulation is pure madness. Switching to a non-hockey number like 82 pisses me off even more.
