The Edmonton Oilers have qualified Ethan Bear and William Lagesson while not qualifying Andreas Athanasiou and Matt Benning! What are your thoughts? #Oilers #EdmontonOilers #EthanBear #WilliamLagesson #Athanasiou #Benning
This qualifying offer had better be a precursor to fair negotiations. Benning just got paid almost four million. (over two seasons) If he was worth that. No way is Bear worth less than two over same time span.
The AA trade was a risk for sure. A risk that blew up. At least our GM doesn't get emotionally attached to his decisions and is willing to make the right decision even if it might make him look stupid.
You kinda brushed by Bear quick like. How much do you sign Bear for? Only on strength of one nhl season. But I hope Oilers can get him signed to two years for 3m each.
Never mind cap and pandemic. Those factors can’t fully determine negotiation. How much has he earned for Oilers through his progression in these past five years? He was top defender award winner in his final year of jr. Helped lead his team to memorial cup appearance. Got like 70 pts, which is what gets blue liners a first round draft ranking. And he came in, as a rookie, and absolutely helped solidify the top four on Oilers blue line. Staples has said he would not be opposed to Oilers signing him to same or similar contract as Klefbom got. Seven years at 4.1m.
Edmonton needs to get bigger not smaller, I’m not big on Bear, but at least he’s got good puck moving skills. I’d like to see Dubois from Columbus ink a deal with Edmonton, I think he’d be a good fit on McDavids LW. Friday will be interesting!!!
AA was a gamble taken to help out in playoffs, I think was a good risk that didnt pay off. Had the Oilers won a round or two, AA would have been a good move
Kuffner not getting a QO was a surprise. Hopefully they can come to a deal. Most of the others I'm not sure if they can go beyond the AHL level. In so far as Bear goes (and Lagesson) giving a Qualifying Offer (QO) is the least expensive way of trying to keep them without giving them a huge raise. With reality being what it is every manager is looking for cheapest. If a guy is offered more or you literally are in a no-win scenario and you don't give them the big raise you have to look at that cap and decide if you can afford them. Some times the answer is yes, but some times it's no. I can see Lagesson taking the QO. I can't see Bear taking it. I can see Bear getting a raise. Paying a first line (sometimes) or even second line D 800K a year (ish) which is what the QO is shows a degree is disrespect especially if you consider the minutes munched and the skill shown. I can see Bear getting at least 1.5 from another team and Holland having to pony up or go higher. Lagesson gets the same amount by the way. Think about that. Is Lagesson the same "value" as Bear to us?

2 second round draft picks > 3 million qualified cap space

Looks like we may get Markstrom.
