Wow a Canadian article likes the Canadian team. Legitimately laughable they think sabres 2nd line is comparable to Ottawa

We’re neck and neck in the short-term, but they don’t have a goalie prospect close to Levi’s caliber. In fact, their entire prospect pool isn’t close to Buffalo’s

So, it is equal to slight favor toward Buffalo in the short-term, but Buffalo has a sizeable advantage in the long-term.

The way the article is written is kinda funny IMO. It pretty methodically moves throughout the lineups to position them as equals. Despite this, I think neither team is dramatically ahead of the other at the moment.

However, I gotta note that they said “for purposes of this article, I’m going to use last year’s second line”, and proceeded to cherry pick Mitts and Olofsson, rather than use our actual second line.

Also, is Zub even good? Like, what’s his game?

I love the Sabres but one thing we are not is big.

Ottawa’s rebuild is so fucked. They will hit their peak in like a year or two, and have zero prospects to add, not a lot of cap space, and will just keep trying to spend draft picks for help now.

I was thinking the same thing. Other than Boucher and Jarventie, there isn’t much else in the pipeline. They brought in DeBrincat for offense, and have already shipped him out. They won’t be able to keep all those defenseman when it’s time for them to get paid. If they handout a bad contract to Chychrun, they’ll need to rebuild again.

This article is dogwater consider it says they will follow how we lined up last season and has mitts cozen olofsson as the second line????

It was Quinn Cozens Peterka 90% of the year…

Idk, they’re hyping themselves up too much, but Tkachuk/Chycrun could be valuable playoff pieces (if they make it). I don’t think they screwed themselves on DB quite as bad as people think either, even though it’s obviously not a player they’d acquire again. They’re not NJ, but it if they stay healthy they could give us problems. People shouldn’t count them out, but they also have just as much to prove as we do.

As a neutral with no dog in the fight, I think Buffalo is slightly ahead, but it’s closer than you guys think

If you look at players, in their 20s or below. The defensive core is roughly the same. Buffalo has Dahlin, Power and Samuelsson. Ottawa has Chabot, Sanderson and Chychrun. Buffalo have the giants in Dahlin and Power. But the combined quality of the big 3 Sens defensemen cancel them out. I wouldn’t call Zub a core piece, but he is equivalent to a Samuelsson, so Ottawa have a slight edge in depth. But you can’t argue against Dahlin and Power either

Goalies are voodoo, except blue chip prospects with high-overall pedigree like Wallstedt, Knight and Askarov, so I won’t go too deep there. But both teams have good enough talents in Levi and Sogaard. And Korpisalo is a good long term bet for Ottawa too.

However, Buffalo gets the slight edge on forwards. Thompson and Stutzle more or less cancel each other out, the same goes for Tuch and Brady, Cozens and Norris, Mittelstadt and Pinto, Krebs and Greig. Ottawa has slightly more quality in Batherson. However, Quinn and Peterka have a lot of potential. The main deciding factor is the prospect pool. Buffalo has insane depth with guys like Benson, Savoie, Ostlund and Kulich. While Ottawa only have Tyler Boucher.

Even if you want to be very pessimistic, and say Quinn and Peterka have not proven anything yet. And they may still be busts. The chances that those 2, plus Benson, Savoie, Ostlund, Kulich do not reach the quality of a Batherson or better is slim to none. There is a good chance at least 2-3 of these players become impact players.

At the same time, you only have enough money to pay for 6 high-end forwards, and the others need to paid Top 9/Bottom 6 money. And Ottawa have enough depth to ice a solid Top 6, so even though Buffalo has quantity, it really doesn’t mean much in the long term. Due to the salary cap structure, they will only be able to keep a select few. However, that also means more trade value to flip them for upgrades in defense and goaltending, which Ottawa can’t do without mortgaging the future.

I actually think that was a reasonably fair assessment. It’s also the last year these two teams will be close – the Sabres have about 5 forward prospects I’d take over anyone in the Sens pool and have the clear cut best Defenseman by a large margin, which is more important than their current edge in depth

Levi the X factor as he always is in any short-term or long-term projection of the Sabres
