The Toronto Maple Leafs and Ilya Samsonov have taken the next step in their arbitration process but will we see the two sides go to a hearing? David Morassutti gives his thoughts on the Leafs and Samsonov filing their salary number ahead of arbitration and whether the gap in value should be concerning. David also explains the next step the team will have to take with Matt Murray if and when a deal gets done with Samsonov and the potential complication with a buyout. No way Murray sits on the bench if he was injured at the end of the year, that makes no sense. So starter goes down but back up is too injured to put in?

A 3 way deal between Pitt-Carolina-Leafs which will include Pesce, Nylander, Karlsson.
The middle ground with Samsonov is around 3.5. Leafs get to choose the term, so two years. Not perfect but Dubas left such a mess behind the solutions aren't going to be perfect. I wish they would just trade Nylander and be done with it. He can't defend, he has to be sheltered. Take a player(s) with less goals who has a complete game. Murray, trade him or buy him out. He has no value as a player and it was stupid to trade for him.
Samsonov wants 5 million same as kumper who won stanley cup lol. Samsonov needs to finish full year without injuries to prove himself first not worth 5 probobly 3.2 million
A buyout for Murray is one way to make caproom for Sammy. It involves no loss of picks, and requires no other team to pull it off. If Matthews and Nylander wait it out….. and nobody gets traded, I'd like to see Stastny and on league minimum to share duties with Holmberg a little..
Just moments ago I commented on the above episode on a March 2022 episode of the daytime (via Sportsnet 590 The Fan) Real Kyper and Bourne Show (title: "All Eyes On Jack Campbell As Leafs Lose Mrazek For Six Weeks | Kyper & Bourne"). From that radio show a claim by Kypreos (a cohost of said show) of an inability of NHL teams to buy out the contracts of injured players (from the 4:40 mark, of "You cannot buy a guy out who's hurt"). That Morassutti, starting @ the 8:15 mark of the relevant Locked On Leafs' episode, claimed that the Leafs couldn't buy Murray out unless that goalie had been health didn't surprise me given Kypreos's claim over 15 months ago on the Real Kyper and Bourne Show on then-Leafs' backup Mrazek.
