Avs and Ross Colton Agree to a 4 year $16 Million Deal to Avoid Arbitration

The Colorado Avalanche avoided an arbitration hearing with Ross Colton and hammered out a deal that will pay the newly acquired member of the team $4 million annually for the next four years. Most in the sports community figured the deal would be between $3-4 million. Even though that’s right where it came in at, many were thinking it was a little bit of an overpay. We discuss our thoughts on the deal.

We also get to a few listener questions including why next offseason will not be very exciting for the Avs, and we predict the point totals for some key members of the team.

  1. Not sure where you are getting the info that the cap could go up $9-10 mil next year, i haven't seen that anywhere. Most of the estimates say between $4-5 mil next year. Now, looking at Capfriendly for next year they are factoring in a $4 mil cap increase for next year and with Landy's $7 mil counting against it, they have just over $10 mil to play with next summer.

With that being said, I don't see Toews signing for less than $8 mil and that would be a team friendly deal with more term than you are probably comfortable with for a guy who will turn 31 within a year of signing that deal. If the Avs can sign him at say 5 years at $8 mil AAV then they would still probably need to move some salary to fill out the roster. I think the most likely candidate for that move would be Manson. His NTC changes to a 12 team no trade list just before the draft next summer that they can probably work with to to get some kind of return from another team unless he spends all year on the IR again this year. I still think Girard is a break glass in case of emergency trade piece. I'm not saying he will never be traded, but if they have to they would much rather trade him from a position of strength than a cap dump as he would fetch a healthy return on the market.

  2. How could they possibly afford to sign Kane this year? Do you think he will sign a crazy cheap team friendly deal to try to win another cup?

  3. Compher as a 3C would have cost 5 million…and less production. This is higher than I liked, but with cap space going up it won't be bad. But no $$ left for anyone else

  4. Patty kane aint coming here. He has no reason to. Idk why yall keep asking, its never going to happen. Its honesty sort or silly but yall do you.
Id love to see 50 from ryjo and 50 from wood, 40ish from Drouin and we be sitting mad pretty. God bless yall, cant wait for this next season, its going to be so interesting!

  5. I don't see the cap going up by 8-10 million. I expect more like 4. Also if Toews can get $8 million in FA the avs can give him 8X$7 and it's the same money🤞🤞

  6. I believe Toews will sign 6.5 to 7 ,,, cause Bo will be that #2 so they won’t pay Devon that $ , cause they are expecting Byram to develop into that #2 ,,,PS tell Kane to go back to NYR , don’t want him!

  7. I have to agree with Chris. In my opinion, if Colton's scores as many points as JT and has a better +/-, then he will be more than worth the contract to me. I enjoyed JT, but I was not happy with his production. Especially, when we think about as a second line center, that was at best an average season, but by far away JT's best.

  8. I have a buddy who is a Wings fan but also became a Tampa fan because of Yzerman’s time there. He’s telling me this is going to be a steal for the Avs and from the small sample size I’ve seen from Colton, I think he’s right. And he’s at that age where he could really take off into his prime with the right guys around him and in an expanded role. I also like how the Avs have locked up a few guys on multi-year contracts because if both Colton and Wood pan out, it builds a more robust core for the 4-6 year window they have to win cups. I know not everyone is onboard but I’m incredibly excited to see how they look next season as they definitely needed a makeover after last year.

  9. Agree that isnt worth debating 500K-1M on Colton especially since hes replacing Compher at a cheaper price. 9-10M seems steep for a cap increase. I've heard 4-5M for the next 2 seasons, which means Toews is gone if Landeskog comes back unless they move money. Toews would be a devastating loss and their team defense will suffer more than some people realize.

  10. Why not just keeping ERod? Oh yes, I forgot, he was too good in his time with the Avs. That's how weird the Avs work, see Naz, Burky, and yes, even 🇩🇪 Grubauer! 😢😡🤮

  11. Well, in your usual eerie fashion, like you have ESPN or something, you predicted everything I was going to type here. Dammit.

  12. Kind of an unrelated question to the video but you talking about leky on the PP made me start thinking, what do you think of the Avs assistant coaching and specifically how their special teams perform? I don’t have the stats in front of me but I feel like our power play has been really lackluster when you consider the talent on the first unit (arguably cost us the series vs Seattle) and our penalty kill has been just average outside of the cup run. At what point do we need to start holding the coaching staff accountable for the remarkably average special teams play the past few seasons?

  13. I don’t think Kyle is quite wrapping his head around Chris’ point on Kane. It makes zero sense for him to sign now. He signs what a low deal on a team for a second line role, when he can wait until he’s healthy, and maybe a team has had an injury, or bad performance, and suddenly he’s looking at a first line gig and much bigger money. It’s kind of common sense here.

  14. If this ever was discussed. Maybe it has already but really what is the draw with the signing of Wood? They truly are seeing something deeper in him to go for such a long contract. It's moves like that that make you think the game the avs want to play is truly a specific one.
